Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI) is seeking a mid‑level In‑House Legal Counsel with four to seven years of relevant, post‑call legal experience for its Iqaluit, Nunavut office.
NTI Legal Counsel works closely with the NTI Board of Directors, senior staff, and external counsel/consultants to provide legal services to the organization. Responsibilities include preparing and attending meetings of NTI Members and the Board of Directors (may include travel), conducting legal research and providing legal advice in areas such as Nunavut Agreement interpretation and implementation, Indigenous/constitutional, administrative, corporate, employment, wildlife and natural resources law, contracts, reviewing legislation and regulations, preparing submissions on proposed legislation, appearing before institutions of public government and government agencies, and overseeing litigation.
The ideal candidate should have 4 to 7 years of relevant, post‑call legal experience, be a member in good standing with the Law Society of Nunavut or be currently eligible for membership (must have a bachelor’s degree from a recognized Canadian law school and be an active member of another jurisdiction in Canada).
Excellent drafting, analytical, and communication skills are required. Good verbal and written Inuktun communication skills are a strong asset, and willingness to learn is required. Working knowledge of Nunavut and key articles of the Nunavut Agreement is essential. Knowledge of Inuit organizations’ governance structure and Inuit/Indigenous legal/policy issues is a strong asset.
The ability to work with demanding deadlines, strong problem‑solving abilities, and the ability to work in a politically sensitive environment and under high levels of stress/pressure are required.
Preference will be given to Inuit enrolled under the Nunavut Agreement.
Starting salary commensurate with experience and NTI’s salary grid. NTI offers a comprehensive benefit package, including an employee pension plan, group insurance and vacation travel assistance.
Housing allowance of $35,865.00
