Structural/Geotechnical Design Manager

Overview FCC Canada is part of the Construction Division of FCC Group, with a presence in Canada since 1997. The company is involved in multiple civil works projects in Ontario and British Columbia, including subway infrastructure like the Scarborough Subway Extension (SSE) and the Toronto York Spadina Subway Line Expansion. FCC Canada excels in roads, railways, maritime construction, tunnels, bridges, and subway projects.

Project Opportunity As part of the STC project, FCC is looking for a Structural/Geotechnical Design Manager to join the joint venture team.

Main Responsibilities

Manage structural and geotechnical design matters in collaboration with the client, designer, construction team, and multidisciplinary partners on the joint venture project.

Facilitate the efficient delivery of structural and geotechnical design as well as design interfaces by coordinating design development with designers and project requirements with the client and stakeholders.

Lead and check the geo‑structural design developed by the design team.

Manage value engineering, risk assessment, life‑cycle costing, earned value and constructability reviews.

Monitor and track designers’ performance according to schedule and track design changes.

Review technical submissions to ensure compliance with specified design requirements and standards, identifying design or interdisciplinary issues and ensuring constructability and construction methods are coordinated with the construction team.

Resolve issues during construction through engineering and coordination with the designer and construction team.

Manage and track design documentation, submittals, and reporting progress, alerting team members of risks related to potential delays.

Facilitate effective communication between the design team and construction team.

Other duties related to design management.

Education and Qualifications

A degree or diploma in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering or a relevant field from a recognized institution.

3+ years of design management experience on rail/transit infrastructure projects for structural and geotechnical works.

Strong aptitude in design and construction of structural and geotechnical works.

Capability to critique geotechnical and structural designs and develop simplified models and/or calculations.

Experience working with TTC and Metrolinx is preferred.

Job Requirements

Familiarity with BIM processes and functionality.

Thorough understanding of design process cycle, contracts, plans, construction drawings, specification developments and regulations.

Thorough understanding of engineering and architectural principles, project management methodologies and industry standards.

Strong knowledge of OBC, sustainability standards, accessibility standards, municipal standards and other regulations.

Proficiency in project management software and computer applications such as Aconex, Bluebeam, Navisworks, Revit and MS Office (MS Project, Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint).

Ability to plan, schedule and organize a variety of activities and deal with stressful situations on tight deadlines with a high degree of accuracy.

A strong eye for design details and the ability to coordinate design and assist in making design‑driven decisions.

Excellent analytical, and negotiation skills to lead discussions and work with internal/external stakeholders.
