OVERVIEW
We are seeking an experienced
Commercial Lines Senior Underwriter
to join our
Complex Risk Casualty Team . In this role, you will play a key role in driving the company’s growth and profitability. The position involves assessing the acceptability of business opportunities in line with company guidelines, including reviewing and pricing new submissions, renewals, and endorsements.
The successful candidate will leverage their technical expertise, creativity, and entrepreneurial mindset to build strong broker relationships and expand and manage a profitable book of business.
Our Senior Underwriters work closely with experienced practice leaders, managers, and executives, supported by a broad product range, meaningful capacity, and the autonomy needed to succeed. In collaboration with colleagues and leadership, they deliver value-added expertise and exceptional service to our broker partners.
This is a
hybrid/remote position
with the preference to be
based in BC .
RESPONSIBILITY
This position will:
Perform risk analysis using internal and external data resources for quoting, negotiating, and authorizing renewals and new business opportunities
Pursue and achieve production targets
Travel occasionally to meet with brokers and promote business opportunities
Develop and support professional business partnerships with brokers through prompt service, proactive communication, and solution-oriented problem solving
Lead business development meetings with brokers to strengthen relationships and prospect for new opportunities
Handle endorsement requests within delegated authority, independently engaging with brokers to clarify requests or seek missing information
Make decisions based on imperfect information
Communicate decisions and respond to requests promptly and professionally
Build and maintain positive working relationships with internal and external parties, including attending industry seminars and networking events
Negotiation coverage with brokers within delegated authority parameters
Manage, strengthen, and grow a book of profitable business
Maintain compliance with established corporate guidelines and delegated authority parameters
Work independently to meet deadlines and accomplish goals
Take ownership of work-related activities and follow through on commitments
Deal effectively with pressure, maintain a positive outlook, and recover quickly from setbacks
Prioritize and complete tasks within allocated timeframes
Take responsibility for learning and implementing new ideas, methods, and technologies
Demonstrate effective communication and interpersonal skills (written and verbal)
Exhibit strong decision-making and analytical skills
Mentor and train newer team members (if required)
Think strategically, formulate objectives, and implement plans consistent with company’s long-term interests
Document files ensuring completeness, compliance, and quality standards while maintaining a paperless environment
Complete loss reports and post-claim underwriting reviews
QUALIFICATIONS
You’re a good fit if you have:
At least 5+ years of Commercial Complex Risk Casualty Underwriting or Brokering experience
Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) and/or Canadian Accredited Insurance Broker (CAIB) designation or actively pursuing
Have a valid Broker license or ability to qualify for one within 90 days of employment
Proficiency in Microsoft Office
Have existing relationships within the industry you can leverage to attract business opportunities and grow your portfolio
Can lead a business development meeting with a broker to strengthen the existing relationship and prospect for new opportunities
Have attended insurance industry events, such as broker conventions and networking events
Familiarity with basic legal structures in Canada
SALARY
The expected salary range for this position
starts at$80,000+
annually and will be impacted by factors such as the successful candidate’s skills, experience and working location, as well as the specific position’s business line, scope and level.
