Overview of role
The Solution Architect, Data Automation is responsible for the end-to-end solution architecture of digital, data, and automation initiatives within the digital business and data automation domain. The role ensures solutions are fit for purpose, well-designed, and aligned to enterprise architecture standards, strategies, and engineering practices.
This role works closely with business partners, delivery teams, and fellow architects to translate complex requirements into coherent architectural designs, satisfactorily reconcile conflicting concerns of stakeholders and manage tradeoffs, to create the intended business outcomes. The Solution Architect contributes to the maturity of WestJet’s architecture practice by applying standards, promoting sound architectural principles, and mentoring others through collaboration and example.
Key deliverables include
Develops and maintains stable, viable solution architectures, ensuring consistency of design and adherence to architectural standards across multiple initiatives
Owns architectural design for assigned projects or programs, including key decisions, tradeoffs, and documentation
Translates complex business and technical requirements into architectural designs, models, and implementation guidance
Balances functional needs, cost, security, service quality, and operational considerations to deliver pragmatic, scalable solutions
Ensures solutions align with enterprise architectures, strategies, policies, and standards, including security, privacy, and regulatory requirements
Provides risk-based architectural governance, supporting delivery teams while managing changes and deviations appropriately
Coordinates architecture across multiple teams and stakeholders, ensuring solutions integrate effectively within the broader ecosystem
Develops, communicates and maintains solution level roadmaps that align with business outcomes and delivery plans
Acts as a trusted architectural advisor to delivery teams and stakeholders within their domain
Contributes to architecture standards, patterns, and best practices through participation in architecture forums and communities of practice
Guides and mentors engineers, analysts, and peers, supporting capability growth and consistent architectural practices
Experience and qualifications
Postgraduate degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or related discipline, with 5+ years of experience in solution architecture, or an equivalent combination of training and experience
Proven experience designing and delivering complex solutions across digital, data, and automation domains, including familiarity with LLMs and generative AI technologies
Strong stakeholder management and engagement skills, with demonstrated experience in balancing business, functional and systems management requirements to create valuable, resilient solutions
Hands-on experience with Big Data Platforms such as Snowflake and Databricks
Hands-on experience with AI/ML platforms
Understanding of prompt engineering, model fine-tuning and deployment strategies
Knowledge of ethical AI principles and regulatory compliance for AI solutions
Strong understanding of solution architecture frameworks and modelling approaches, such as TOGAF, SABSA, ArchiMate, and the C4 model
Broad technical knowledge across application architecture, integration patterns (APIs, services, microservices), cloud platforms, data, and security
Experience applying automation and digital technologies within enterprise solutions, with the ability to adapt architectural thinking across evolving platforms
Solid understanding of security, privacy, and regulatory requirements, including PCI, PIPEDA, GDPR, and CCPA
Demonstrated ability to collaborate, influence, and communicate effectively with both technical and nontechnical stakeholders
Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to operate effectively across design and delivery contexts
Architecture and/or cloud certifications are considered an asset
