Department Overview:
This division coordinates regular building and grounds maintenance as well as capital construction projects, which are undertaken by staff or by tender, depending on their size and complexity. It is also responsible for maintaining and staffing our seasonal railway operations, midway rides, S.S. Moyie paddle-wheeler and streetcar operations. The division employs a variety of trades on a year-round basis, including mechanics, carpenters, painters and grounds maintenance workers.
Job Overview:
Under the direction of the Transportation Services Manager, the Ship Captain at Heritage Park oversees vessel navigation, ensuring safety and efficiency while providing exceptional customer service to passengers. They lead staff development initiatives, uphold compliance standards, and contribute to the organization's overall excellence and wellbeing through their commitment to workplace health, safety, and a positive work environment.
Responsibilities
Ship Operations
Proficiently navigates the vessel in designated areas, ensuring safe and efficient operation
Provide exceptional customer service by offering information to passengers courteously and friendly, accepting tickets, and addressing passenger inquiries and concerns
Provide an exceptional visitor experience by interacting with passengers in a helpful and courteous manner, answering questions about the S.S. Moyie, its history, and providing a positive and informative experience
Ensure the vessel maintains scheduled passenger service, adhering to the defined routes and timetables
Continuously assess the weather, vessel condition, and other relevant factors and decide to suspend service when passenger or vessel safety is at risk
Guarantee that the vessel is properly maintained, serviced, and repaired by Department of Transport standards and regulations
Ensure successful inspections are conducted to maintain compliance
Oversee all pre- and post-season vessel preparations, ensuring the vessel is fully ready for service and properly winterized
Provide support to the Reservoir Safety Patrol Boat by promptly reporting any unusual occurrences and specifying their location, contributing to the overall safety of the reservoir
Attend year end meetings with City of Calgary about how season progressed, discussing issues/concerns within their jurisdiction
Keeping up with information from PCVA (Passenger & Commercial Vessel Association) and utilizing them as a resource for training, development and other news
Recommend conferences and training for further development and training to Transport Services Manager
Staff Supervision
Regularly assess and enhance staff performance through ongoing feedback, goal-setting, and professional development initiatives, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and individual growth within the team
Support the professional development of staff by assigning relevant training, collaboratively resolving problems, and actively coaching team members
Participate in the recruitment, orientation and training of new staff to ensure employees are provided with complete information and resources to perform their responsibilities
Schedule and coordinate staff for private functions held on the vessel after regular Park hours
Organizational Excellence and Wellbeing
Contribute to inspiring and immersive experiences at the Park through your roles and responsibilities by engaging in Heritage Park initiatives that align with the overall mission and vision of the Park
Demonstrate commitment to workplace health and safety by complying with Heritage Park's Health, Safety and Environment Management System (HSEMS), following safe work practices, reporting work-related incidents, injuries and hazards, participating in employer training, and adhering policies including the Code of Conduct and the Workplace Violence and Harassment policy
Actively support a positive work environment through creating an atmosphere of inclusion, engagement and fulfillment in line with Heritage Park values
Demonstrate responsible stewardship of our people, collections and financial assets by ensuring that they are handled with integrity, sustainability, and a focus on long-term benefits for the organization and its stakeholders
Perform other duties as required
Required Qualifications
Completion of secondary school education is required; completion of related post-secondary education in Nautical Science is preferred
Appropriate Certificate of Competency and Certificate of Proficiency, issued by Transport Canada, are required; a master certificate of 150 GT or more significant is mandatory
Minimum 3 years’ related work experience is required
Proof of training in relevant areas of seamanship
Knowledge of marine safety procedures is essential
Strong knowledge of rules and regulations surrounding the operation of a marine passenger vessel including the CSA and STCW
Must be certified with Marine Basic First Aid (training is provided by the Park)
Problem identification and solving, as well as organizational skills are required
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Demonstrated strong interpersonal and communication skills in a client-faced setting
All successful candidates (over the age of 18) will be required to go through Police Information Check as a condition of employment.
Special Clothing and Equipment
Appropriate costuming and safety equipment will be provided by Heritage Park; and
Footwear, as designated by the Heritage Park Costume Department, will be provided by the employee.
Special Working Conditions
The position will be exposed to weather extremes and will work both indoors and outdoors; and
This position is physically demanding, and the incumbent must have the ability to lift heavy items, stand for long periods of time and walk throughout the Park for extended periods
Hours of Work
The position has various scheduled hours of work including weekends, statutory holidays, fluctuating hours and overtime as required
