Job Description
We have partnered with a leading financial institution who is seeking a high-caliber
Research Analyst
to join its Toronto-based Metals & Mining team. This role is a critical component of the Investment Banking and Capital Markets division, providing deep-sector expertise, sophisticated financial modeling, and actionable investment intelligence on precious and base metal producers globally.
The successful candidate will support Senior Analysts and Managing Directors in navigating the complexities of the mining lifecycle, from exploration and resource estimation to production and global commodity cycles.
Core Responsibilities
Financial Engineering:
Construct and maintain complex, asset-level Life of Mine (LOM) financial models, incorporating Net Present Value, internal rate of return, and sensitivity analysis for global mining projects.
Sector Intelligence:
Provide continuous coverage of the metals and mining sector, including monitoring commodity price trends, geopolitical risks, and regulatory shifts affecting mining jurisdictions (specifically in Canada, Australia, and Latin America).
Technical Synthesis:
Distill technical reports (NI 43-101 / JORC) and feasibility studies into succinct investment narratives for internal committees and external institutional clients.
Due Diligence:
Support M&A and capital raising mandates by performing rigorous operational and financial due diligence on target mining companies and specific mineral assets.
Stakeholder Engagement:
Assist in the preparation of pitch books, industry thematic reports, and investment memos for Senior Executives and Institutional Investors.
Market Monitoring:
Track daily market movements and company-specific news, providing rapid-response analysis on earnings releases, resource updates, and M&A activity.
Required Qualifications & Experience
Professional Background:
2–4 years of experience in Equity Research, Investment Banking, Corporate Development (Mining), or a technical role within a mining consultancy.
Technical Mastery:
Exceptional proficiency in Excel-based financial modeling is mandatory. Familiarity with mining-specific valuation metrics (P/NAV, EV/EBITDA, AISC) is highly preferred.
Educational Credentials:
Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Commerce, or Engineering (Geology/Mining Engineering). A CFA designation or candidacy is considered a strong asset.
Sector Knowledge:
Foundational understanding of the mining lifecycle, including exploration, metallurgy, and ESG considerations within the extractive industries.
Communication:
Superior written and verbal communication skills; ability to synthesize "technical geology" into "investment logic" for a financial audience.
Competencies for Success
Analytical Rigor:
An obsession with data accuracy and the ability to work under high-pressure deadlines typical of the Toronto mining finance hub.
Intellectual Curiosity:
A proactive desire to stay ahead of global commodity trends and emerging technologies in the mining sector (e.g., lithium, copper, and battery metals).
Strategic Thinking:
Ability to look beyond the numbers to understand the "big picture" of a deal or a market cycle.
