Job Description

Junior Camp Counsellor (March Break Camps 2026) Working with the Town of Newmarketโ€™s Recreation and Culture Team means the opportunity to make a difference and connect with your community. Working in Recreation is the start of something special, gaining valuable work experience and learning new skills. We are looking for dedicated individuals who enjoy working with others with a passion to deliver high-quality programs, events and services. One thing is for certainโ€”you will love the experience and our participants will too!

Salary:

$17.60 - $18.25 per hour

Responsibilities

Assist with staff break coverage and camp swim ratios.

Facilitate safe, engaging and fun activities for campers, including games, songs, crafts, swimming, etc.

Ensure safe delivery of camp programming by following all Town policies and procedures, providing adequate supervision, and managing camper behaviours.

Collaborate with other Camp Counsellors, Inclusion Facilitators and Camp Directors to provide an inclusive environment, resolve concerns and plan the camp day.

Respond to emergency situations, including performing first aid and documentation.

Respond to enquiries and provide quality customer service to participants.

Qualifications

Counsellor in Training Program or Babysitting course or equivalent.

Less than 1 year related volunteer or work experience working with toddlers, children and/or youth.

Ability to deal courteously and effectively with camp participants and staff, bus drivers, parent/guardians and the general public.

Good organizational and leadership skills.

Flexibility to work a range of hours at various locations.

Ability to participate in swimming activities and oversee camp participants in pre-set swim groups which comply with Town of Newmarket ratios.

Current Standard First Aid & CPR-C certification required.

Lifesaving Societyโ€™s Safeguard certification required.

Current High Five (Principles of Healthy Child Development) certification required.

Behaviour Management Systems, Safe Management or Crisis Prevention and Intervention certification is an asset.

Due to the nature of the contacts of this position a Police Vulnerable Sector Check satisfactory to the Town (Those 18 Years & Older) or the completion of Declaration of Minors โ€“ Working with Vulnerable Individuals Self Declaration Form (Those 17 Years and Younger) is required.

Please Note:

Certifications are not required at time of application but must be obtained prior to job commencement. The Town of Newmarket may offer opportunities for certification.

*The Town of Newmarket's March Break Camps will run from March 16 โ€“ 20, 2026.
