The Principal Mechanical Engineer – Heat Exchangers leads the technical direction, design integrity, and engineering execution for complex thermal equipment across major energy and industrial projects. This role provides deep subject‑matter expertise in heat exchanger design while guiding multidisciplinary teams, mentoring engineers, and ensuring all work meets APEGA professional practice standards. The successful candidate must hold a valid P.Eng designation (or be immediately eligible for registration) in Alberta.

Key Responsibilities

Lead the design, specification, and analysis of heat exchangers, including shell‑and‑tube, air‑cooled, plate‑and‑frame, and specialty thermal equipment.

Perform and review thermal and mechanical calculations in accordance with ASME, TEMA, API, and applicable Alberta regulatory requirements.

Serve as the technical authority for heat exchanger design, troubleshooting, and fitness‑for‑service assessments.

Stamp and approve engineering deliverables as a Professional Engineer under APEGA guidelines.

Oversee development of datasheets, design packages, material selection, and vendor documentation.

Provide technical leadership to project teams, including mentoring junior and intermediate engineers.

Collaborate with project managers, procurement, fabrication, and construction teams to ensure design intent is met throughout the project lifecycle.

Lead technical reviews, HAZOPs, and design optimization studies.

Support proposal development, cost estimates, and client technical discussions.

Drive continuous improvement in engineering tools, standards, and best practices.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering; Master’s degree an asset.

Registered P.Eng with APEGA

(or eligible for immediate registration).

12–20+ years of mechanical engineering experience, with a strong focus on heat exchanger design and analysis.

Expert knowledge of ASME Section VIII, TEMA, API 660/661, and Alberta pressure equipment regulations.

Proven experience leading engineering teams and delivering complex projects.

Proficiency with thermal and mechanical design software (e.g., HTRI, PV Elite, Compress).

Strong communication skills and ability to interface directly with clients and vendors.

Demonstrated ability to provide engineering sign‑off and act as Engineer of Record.

Experience with EPC or EPCM project environments.
