Crew Leader, Research & Monitoring (Urban Forestry)

How you will contribute as part of the TRCA team: Starting in May, the Crew Leader, Research & Monitoring (Urban Forestry) is responsible for overseeing and carrying out daily environmental inventory and monitoring fieldwork activities in support of TRCA’s research and monitoring programs and projects. Overall, two crew leaders will play an integral role in the implementation of an urban tree inventory project occurring in Peel Region, and one in conducting an urban forest assessment in the City of Pickering. This position is responsible for ensuring that data is collected efficiently, safely, and effectively. The crew leader is responsible for recording data accurately, managing time and resources efficiently, maintaining equipment, and ensuring safety in the field. The crew leader will be in constant communication with their team to ensure adherence to project objectives, protocols, and timelines, and address problems as they arise. The crew leader must also ensure compliance with relevant corporate and municipal procedures and by‑laws, and provincial and federal legislation.

Major Responsibilities

Leads and carries out data collection on trees (species, DBH, height, condition, etc.), and/or forest patches and invasive species and pests.

Coordinates staff fieldwork, timeline requirements, site visits, and priorities; providing crew lead level work and health and safety direction.

Conducts inventories and monitoring fieldwork activities which include:

Prepares daily equipment and vehicles for use, ensures all are in a good state for safe operation.

Collects, manages and analyzes data (when required); ensuring records are complete.

Maintains sampling instruments and equipment (calibration, storage & tracking, minor repairs).

Completes quality control checks / tests; maintains records.

Ensures the required site activities are completed as per work scope; ensuring health and safety protocols are followed by crews.

Participates in and/or leads daily safety meetings including tailgate meetings, hazard identification and emergency planning.

Qualifications

Education:

Post‑secondary diploma or degree in Resource Management, Environmental Science, Urban Forestry, Biology or a related field

Driver’s License:

Valid Ontario Class G2 driver's license

Experience

2+ years of experience in environmental, ecosystem, water resource, or urban forestry research or monitoring

Experience working with various monitoring equipment used in environmental sciences

Knowledge / Skill / Ability – Competencies

Excellent ability to identify tree species and common invasive species found in the Greater Toronto Area or southern Ontario

The ability to demonstrate strong problem‑solving skills in a field environment

Ability to comprehend written documentation and procedural guidelines; skilled in writing clear correspondence (concise, logical, grammatically correct)

Good interpersonal skills and ability to work as a team member to coach staff

Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations and the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act

Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite including online software such as MS Excel, Teams, SharePoint, coupled with a basic knowledge of GIS software (ArcGIS, Google Earth, Survey123, and/or Field Maps)

Able to self‑manage workload and prioritize tasks as an ongoing challenge in a frequently fluctuating workload and multiple deadlines

Experience with forest mensuration an asset
