Ontario region pay information The salary range for this position in Ontario is $130,000 to $160,000. The determination of an applicant’s base salary within this range is based on the individual’s location, skills and competencies, and unique qualifications.

Your role, your impact Alithya Engineering is growing to keep up with the digitalization demands from our clients. As an experienced Assembler Specialist, you’ll provide hands‑on code changes and technical oversight for an installed Varian 72‑based digital control computer, including design reviews, patch development, test planning, commissioning support, and documentation needed for operation in a regulated, safety‑related environment.

Your day‑to‑day

Act as a subject matter expert for making changes to Varian‑based computer systems and software;

Assess and plan: Review current system architecture, codebase, and documentation, update computer system design documentation, and identify technical risks and test strategies;

Design and implement assembler‑level patches and small feature changes;

Technical oversight: Provide peer reviews, code reviews, and design reviews, and mentor client/partner engineers on best practices for legacy systems within modern governance;

Verification and commissioning: Support test planning and FAT/SIT executions.

Keys to your success

5 to 10 years in low‑level assembler on minicomputers/mainframes or comparable embedded environments with interrupt‑driven I/O;

Experience with real‑time tasking, priority scheduling, determinism, latency budgets, watchdog/error handling, and I/O scanning in process control environments;

Experience with safety‑critical and safety‑related software quality assurance lifecycle;

Proficient in at least one of the following: Varian 72 assembly, PDP‑11 (MACRO‑11), PDP‑8, or comparable mainframe/minicomputer assembler (e.g., IMD/IBM‑1800 class);

Demonstrated ability to reverse engineer legacy assembly and apply “surgical” patches to correct defects or add minor capabilities without destabilizing the existing executive/user programs;

Ability to read, reason about, and patch existing assembly with tight timing constraints and interrupt‑driven I/O;

Strong grasp of linkers, loaders, memory maps, overlay schemes, interrupt vectors, DMA, device handlers, and concurrency/scheduling on cooperative or simple pre‑emptive executives;

Eligible to obtain CSIS Site Access security clearance for nuclear facilities.

Extra edge

Experience in the nuclear industry;

Experience on PDP‑11/PDP‑8, IMD/IBM‑1800‑class systems, or any low‑level assembler on comparable architectures;

Demonstrated delivery of engineering documentation packages.
