We are seeking a
Specialist Mechanical Engineer – Turbomachinery
to serve as the highest level of technical authority within the Mechanical discipline for turbomachinery systems across complex greenfield and brownfield projects. This role is recognized as an enterprise-level subject matter expert (SME) in high-speed rotating equipment, including compressors, steam and gas turbines, expanders, and large critical machinery trains.
The
Specialist Mechanical Engineer – Turbomachinery
provides deep technical leadership, governance, and assurance across projects, supporting delivery teams, discipline leadership, and clients on high-risk, high-complexity turbomachinery scope. This position operates with a high degree of autonomy and influence and is accountable for technical excellence, safety, reliability, and lifecycle performance of turbomachinery assets across major capital projects and operating facilities.
Key Responsibilities
Act as the highest-level technical authority and enterprise SME for turbomachinery across projects and business lines.
Provide technical governance and assurance for the design, specification, procurement, installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting of turbomachinery systems.
Lead and approve complex engineering deliverables including machinery specifications, data sheets, equipment selection studies, and technical bid evaluations for critical turbomachinery packages.
Serve as the escalation point for complex technical challenges, machinery failures, vibration issues, rotor dynamics concerns, and performance shortfalls.
Provide expert review and approval of turbomachinery design deliverables produced by project teams, global execution centers, and third-party engineering partners.
Interface at a senior technical level with OEMs and vendors, including participation in technical alignment meetings, design reviews, factory acceptance tests (FATs), performance testing, and site commissioning support.
Provide strategic technical input into machinery train configuration, redundancy philosophy, reliability strategies, and long-term asset performance planning.
Support Mechanical Leads, Project Engineering Managers, and discipline leadership with technical decision-making, risk mitigation strategies, and execution planning related to turbomachinery scope.
Provide expert input into operability, maintainability, reliability, RAM studies, and lifecycle cost optimization for critical rotating equipment packages.
Contribute to and govern discipline standards, specifications, engineering practices, and technical guidelines related to turbomachinery and high-speed rotating equipment.
Lead or participate in HAZOPs, constructability reviews, model reviews, reliability workshops, and technical risk assessments for machinery scope.
Provide mentorship, technical coaching, and capability development for senior and principal-level mechanical engineers within the turbomachinery and rotating equipment community.
Support proposals, technical risk reviews, and client engagements as a recognized turbomachinery authority.
Represent the organization as a technical expert in client forums, industry working groups, and technical assurance reviews.
Technical and Industry Experience
Extensive experience delivering turbomachinery engineering on large, complex capital projects across industries such as LNG and gas processing, refining and petrochemicals, carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS), power generation and energy transition projects.
Deep technical expertise in turbomachinery systems including centrifugal, axial, and integrally geared compressors, steam turbines, gas turbines, and expanders, high-speed rotating equipment and machinery trains, couplings, seals, lube oil systems, and auxiliary systems.
Demonstrated expertise in machinery dynamics, rotor dynamics, vibration analysis, surge and performance mapping, and machinery reliability improvement initiatives.
Extensive experience supporting brownfield revamps, debottlenecking projects, machinery replacements, and critical asset upgrades.
Highly conversant with applicable industry codes and standards, including but not limited to API 610, 611, 614, 617, 618, 672, 673, ISO turbomachinery standards, ASME mechanical standards and pressure equipment codes.
Strong understanding of reliability engineering, operability, maintainability, and asset lifecycle management for turbomachinery systems.
Proven ability to operate as a senior technical advisor to clients, operations teams, and project leadership.
Demonstrated track record of providing technical leadership and mentorship to senior engineers and technical leaders.
Advanced proficiency with engineering tools, machinery analysis software, and engineering document management systems.
Education – Qualifications, Accreditation, Training
Required
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with APEGA (or eligible for immediate registration).
Extensive and progressive experience specializing in turbomachinery and high-speed rotating equipment within industrial facilities.
Preferred
Demonstrated experience acting as a recognized technical authority for turbomachinery on large, multidisciplinary capital projects.
Experience contributing to discipline governance, technical assurance frameworks, or enterprise engineering standards.
Experience supporting proposals, business development efforts, and client technical engagements related to turbomachinery systems.
