Purpose
The
Specialist Mechanical Engineer – Static Equipment
is the organization’s highest level of technical authority and recognized subject matter expert for static equipment engineering. This role provides enterprise-level technical leadership, sets technical direction and philosophy, and is accountable for solving the most complex static equipment challenges across major capital projects, brownfield modifications, integrity programs, and advanced technology initiatives.
The
Specialist Mechanical Engineer – Static Equipment
serves as the ultimate escalation point for critical technical decisions related to pressure vessels, heat exchangers, storage tanks, air coolers, and other static equipment. This role plays a pivotal part in shaping company-wide standards, engineering practices, and technical governance, and provides expert advisory support to leadership, clients, and project teams. The Specialist is also a key contributor to business development, technical assurance, and long‑term capability building within the mechanical discipline.
Key Responsibilities
Enterprise Technical Authority & Subject Matter Expertise
Act as the highest-level technical authority for static equipment engineering across the organization.
Provide expert judgement and technical leadership on highly complex, novel, and high-risk static equipment challenges.
Define and approve technical philosophies, design approaches, and engineering strategies for static equipment across projects and portfolios.
Lead resolution of critical technical issues related to design, fabrication, installation, inspection, fitness-for-service, repair, rerate, and life extension.
Perform and/or oversee advanced mechanical analysis and validation using industry-recognized tools (e.g., PV Elite, Compress, AME Tank), ensuring rigorous application of applicable codes and standards.
Technical Governance & Assurance
Establish and maintain enterprise technical governance frameworks for static equipment engineering.
Serve as final technical approver for high-risk deviations, non-conformances, waivers, and alternative engineering solutions.
Provide independent technical assurance on major capital projects and complex brownfield scopes.
Lead peer reviews, technical audits, and independent verification activities for critical static equipment deliverables.
Own and continuously evolve company standards, specifications, templates, and design practices related to static equipment.
Lead development of best practices, lessons learned, and technical guidance to drive engineering excellence.
Identify emerging technologies, evolving codes, and industry trends, and translate these into updated technical frameworks and tools.
Champion continuous improvement initiatives related to safety, reliability, constructability, operability, and maintainability of static equipment.
Act as the senior technical interface with clients, regulators, vendors, fabricators, and inspection agencies for complex static equipment scopes.
Lead high-level technical engagements, critical vendor reviews, and factory acceptance activities for strategically important equipment packages.
Represent the organization in technical forums, industry working groups, and standards committees where appropriate.
Provide authoritative technical input during dispute resolution, claims support, and complex commercial or contractual discussions.
Mentorship, Knowledge Transfer & Technical Leadership
Provide senior technical mentorship and guidance to Specialists, Principals, Leads, and Senior Engineers within the mechanical discipline.
Serve as a trusted technical advisor to engineering leadership and project directors.
Lead internal technical communities of practice, knowledge-sharing initiatives, and specialist forums.
Support development of technical competency frameworks, training programs, and long-term succession planning.
Business Development & Strategic Support
Provide high-level technical input to proposals, pursuits, and front-end development studies.
Support technical risk assessment, scope definition, and execution strategy development for major opportunities.
Advise leadership on technical risk, innovation opportunities, and strategic investment in engineering capabilities.
Technical & Industry Experience
Extensive experience as a senior technical authority for static equipment on large, complex projects within Oil & Gas, Energy Transition, Refining, Gas Processing, Hydrogen, Card Capture, and related industrial sectors.
Deep, expert-level knowledge of ASME, API, CSA, NBIC, and applicable Canadian and international codes and standards.
Proven expertise across pressure vessels, storage tanks, heat exchangers, air coolers, fired equipment interfaces, and associated static equipment over the full asset lifecycle.
Strong background in equipment integrity management, fitness-for-service assessments, repair and alteration programs, and remaining life evaluations.
Demonstrated ability to provide authoritative technical judgement in high-stakes, high-risk engineering scenarios.
Recognized industry credibility with strong communication and stakeholder influence skills.
Education & Professional Qualifications
Bachelor’s or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with APEGA (or eligible for registration).
Extensive mechanical engineering experience with deep specialization in static equipment.
Recognized internally and externally as a leading subject matter expert in static equipment engineering.
