The Engineering Manager, Payments & Financial Infrastructure role is designed to own the technical systems responsible for money movement across their organization. At our partner, payments are not a support function. They are core product infrastructure. They advance funds to lab clients based on AI-driven claim valuation, reconcile against real insurance adjudication data, and manage complex settlement flows that must balance to the penny.

As transaction volume scales into hundreds of millions annually, the complexity of reliability, reconciliation, auditability, and compliance increases materially. This role exists to ensure they scale financial infrastructure with rigor, precision, and long-term architectural clarity. This is a player-coach leadership role, initially hands-on, evolving into team leadership and architectural stewardship of a dedicated payments engineering pod.

This role is accountable for: Technical ownership of payment infrastructure and settlement systems Reliability and correctness of all financial flows Ledger and reconciliation architecture Cross-team coordination for finance-critical systems Building and leading a dedicated payments engineering pod

Key Responsibilities:

Payment Infrastructure Ownership Own systems that disburse client advances, execute Treasury sweeps, process lockbox deposits, and generate settlement payments Ensure all transactions reconcile precisely and remain fully auditable Implement idempotency, monitoring, alerting, retry logic, and failure handling for payment-critical flows Design workflows resilient to bank outages, ACH return codes, NSF events, and timing mismatches Establish zero-error tolerance standards as volume scales

Ledger & Reconciliation Architecture Design and evolve the internal ledger system tracking each receivable lifecycle from claim valuation to advance to adjudication to sweep to final settlement Build reconciliation engines matching Payment Advances to ERA data Automate weekly settlement calculations, including true-ups, clawbacks, and offsets Ensure economic logic for Qualified vs. Non-Qualified claims is correctly implemented Maintain strict auditability and financial traceability across systems

Cross-Team Collaboration & Platform Integration Collaborate closely with Product, Data, Billing, and Clinical Platform teams Ensure payment systems integrate cleanly with claim processing, ERA ingestion, and AI valuation systems Partner with the Data team on financial reporting, reconciliation validation, and KPI consistency Align with shared infrastructure standards including observability, deployment, security, and API governance Actively participate in architecture discussions to prevent payment systems from becoming isolated silos

Payment infrastructure must operate as part of the broader platform, not adjacent to it.

Banking & Financial Partner Integration Own integrations with banking partners and payment rails including ACH, EFT, and lockbox flows Ensure client onboarding for Treasury Accounts and payment configuration is scalable and repeatable Evaluate and integrate banking-as-a-service platforms and financial data providers Maintain compliance with NACHA rules, treasury controls, and internal financial policies

Team Leadership & Engineering Standards Hire and build a payments-focused engineering pod consisting of 2 to 3 engineers within 12 to 18 months Define engineering standards for reliability, testing, deployment, and incident response Establish operational playbooks for payment-critical systems Partner closely with Payment Operations to ensure systems support real-world workflows Balance hands-on contribution with leadership and long-term architectural planning

What This Role Is Not: Not a purely operational finance role Not a detached architecture-only leadership position Not a payments API integration wrapper role

This is a systems-level ownership role where financial correctness, reliability, and architectural clarity are primary responsibilities.

What Success Looks Like: All money movement is reliable, traceable, and auditable Settlement logic is automated and predictable Reconciliation discrepancies are rare and surfaced early Banking integrations are standardized and repeatable Payment-critical incidents decrease over time Cross-team dependencies are clear and well-managed A high-performing payments pod operates with strong engineering discipline

Ideal Background: 8+ years of software engineering experience 3+ years building payment systems, financial infrastructure, or money movement platforms Deep knowledge of ACH including NACHA rules, R-codes, batch construction, and prefunding Experience designing ledger systems or reconciliation engines Strong backend engineering experience including Python, Go, Java, or similar Strong SQL and data modeling skills Experience operating payment-critical systems in production Prior experience hiring or leading small engineering teams Prior experience working at Nubank or in similar fintech companies

Strengths We Value: Precision and rigor in financial system design Systems thinking across multi-party money flows Strong reliability mindset including observability, incident response, and recovery design Clear, structured communication across engineering and finance stakeholders Comfort operating in ambiguity while building durable architecture High ownership and accountability

Why This Role Matters: At our partner, money movement is core infrastructure, not an auxiliary capability.

Every advance, sweep, settlement, and reconciliation must be correct. As they scale into hundreds of millions in annual volume, small architectural weaknesses compound into material financial risk.

This role ensures: They scale financial infrastructure responsibly They maintain trust with lab clients and banking partners They prevent operational fragility as complexity grows They build a durable foundation for future financial products

The Engineering Manager, Payments & Financial Infrastructure will help ensure that as they grow, their financial systems remain precise, resilient, and strategically aligned with the broader platform.

*Please note our partner is only looking for full-time dedicated team members who are eager to fully integrate within their team.
