This is a full-time fully remote working opportunity where you will be working as part of a Scrum team which requires working closely with other software engineers, stakeholders and contributors on the project. Working with respect to the US timezone is a requirement for the position. Attending meetings, being actively involved in the decision making process and collaborating with all of these stakeholders are essential parts of this position.
Role Overview
We are looking for a
Data Compression Engineer
with deep experience in compression algorithms and high-performance systems.
You will work closely with the core engineering team to help
analyze, validate, optimize, and productionize advanced lossless compression technology
.
The ideal candidate is both
technically rigorous and intellectually curious
, capable of investigating unconventional approaches while applying strong systems engineering discipline.
Key Responsibilities
Analyze, implement, and optimize
lossless compression algorithms
Evaluate novel compression techniques and validate performance claims through benchmarking and profiling
Improve compression ratio, throughput, latency, and memory efficiency across diverse file types
Design and optimize high-performance compression libraries and pipelines
Conduct algorithmic experimentation and critical validation of compression models
Develop benchmarking frameworks to evaluate performance across datasets and workloads
Collaborate with the core engineering team to productionize compression systems
Required Qualifications
5+ years of experience in software engineering, with strong focus on systems programming
Demonstrated experience working with
data compression algorithms
Examples: LZ-family (LZ4, LZ77, LZMA), Huffman coding, arithmetic coding, Brotli, Zstandard, etc.
Strong understanding of: entropy encoding, algorithmic complexity, memory and CPU trade-offs, compression benchmarking
Proficiency in
C, C++, Rust, or other high-performance systems languages
Experience with
performance profiling and optimization
Strong analytical and critical thinking capabilities
Comfortable evaluating unconventional or experimental approaches to algorithm design
Nice to Have
Experience working at a
major technology company, infrastructure company, or cloud provider
Background in
high-performance computing, distributed systems, or storage systems
Experience implementing or optimizing compression codecs
Experience with
GenAI or advanced software development workflows
Contributions to open-source compression libraries
Experience designing benchmarking frameworks for algorithm evaluation
Nice to Have
Experience working with large-scale distributed storage systems
Knowledge of columnar storage formats (Parquet, ORC)
Experience with streaming systems (Kafka, Pulsar)
Exposure to ML-based or adaptive compression techniques
Contributions to open-source compression libraries
Experience with SIMD, vectorization, or GPU acceleration
