AEMO at the Heart of Energy
AEMO is Australia's independent energy system and market operator and system planner. AEMO’s purpose is to ensure safe, reliable and affordable energy today, and enable the energy transition for the benefit of all Australians. Australian governments are now committed to a net zero economy for Australia by 2050 and our vision is to enable this. We have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to co‑design the future of our energy systems, and our core values revolve around character, commitment, and connection. Join us as we contribute to this significant transition in the energy sector.
About the role
The Grid Performance and Integration team is responsible for the investigation, study and management of existing and emerging technical risks in a rapidly changing power system.
You will leverage your expertise in power system engineering, operations or design, to understand current and future power system risks and develop means to mitigate them. This will involve supporting the delivery of key risk and performance documents as required under the National Electricity Rules, including AEMO’s General Power System Risk Review and major power system incident reviews. You will lead the framing of complex engineering problem statements, direct power system studies and solve challenging power system issues. You may also support the commissioning of major interconnectors linking NEM regions. Your reports will be published on AEMO’s website, and you will have the opportunity to present key findings to senior leaders at AEMO and across the energy sector.
What you will be doing
Oversee and review power system studies undertaken by engineers in PSS / E and PSCAD as part of understanding existing and emerging power system risks and performance issues as part of AEMO’s General Power System Risk Review, major incident reviews or other analysis as required.
Provide expert technical leadership and direction on power system operational matters and support the development of less experienced engineers with a focus on power system modelling and the development of technical skills.
Support decision makers with high quality analysis and advice.
Ensure the timely and effective delivery of key power system risk and performance documents as required under the National Electricity Rules, including AEMO’s General Power System Risk Review, major incident reviews and others. Lead internal and external stakeholder engagement as part of this process and make recommendations to manage technical risk.
Assess risks and operational mitigation related to current and future network enhancements and remedial actions schemes / special protection schemes.
What you will bring to the role
Relevant tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering or other discipline relevant to power systems, with significant experience in power systems analysis and engineering.
Highly proficient in using PSS / E, PSCAD or DigSILENT for load flow and stability analysis (rotor angle stability and voltage stability), and fault analysis.
Enhanced knowledge of power system protection and control systems theory and application.
A deep understanding of power system planning, assets and equipment design.
Strong stakeholder engagement experience in external facing roles requiring a high level of interpersonal, negotiation and problem‑solving skills; and experience in training and mentoring engineers.
In return some of our benefits to you
Flexible working: work from home, part time, job share, hybrid options, and additional leave options.
Professional development via projects, industry networks, job rotation, study assistance and more.
Give back with up to 4 days of volunteering leave per year.
Reward your hard work with annual performance bonuses (subject to eligibility).
Embrace a healthier you with our wellness program, discounted health insurance, gym perks and our comprehensive Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
