Job Description
Lead electrical systems across transmission, substations and balance‑of‑plant
Shape technical strategy on globally significant renewable energy projects
Report to Head of Technical with real influence over project outcomes
About the Opportunity
Our client is a pioneering organisation at the forefront of large‑scale renewable energy infrastructure development. With an ambitious vision to deliver world‑leading clean energy projects, they are building the technical capability to design, construct and operate some of the most significant energy assets in the Asia‑Pacific region.
We are seeking a highly experienced Principal Engineer, Electrical to join the team in Brisbane, reporting to the Head of Technical. This is a senior technical leadership role accountable for the full lifecycle of electrical systems — from development and detailed design through to construction, testing and commissioning.
The role spans HV/MV transmission, substations, protection and control systems, and related balance‑of‑plant infrastructure. You will provide design oversight, project management support, and regulatory guidance throughout the project lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the design, development and delivery of electrical systems across HV/MV transmission, substations and associated infrastructure, ensuring engineering excellence and safety throughout.
Provide electrical engineering support to feasibility assessments, conceptual design and detailed design phases.
Guide scope development, technology selection, equipment strategies and delivery planning — incorporating operations and maintenance requirements from the outset.
Develop and review technical specifications for HV/MV systems, switchgear, transformers, control and protection systems, and auxiliary equipment in line with relevant standards.
Manage and coordinate electrical system studies including load flow, short circuit, protection coordination, arc flash, grounding, harmonic and stability analyses.
Collaborate with OEMs, consultants and internal engineering teams to ensure reliable electrical network performance and regulatory compliance.
Coordinate across internal project teams and external stakeholders (OEMs, EPCs, contractors, regulators) to resolve complex electrical engineering issues across all project phases.
Support procurement activities including contracting strategies, tender evaluation, negotiations and contractor selection for key electrical packages.
Work cross‑functionally with development, procurement and legal teams to define and execute viable engineering and contracting approaches.
Identify and manage risks and opportunities to maximise project value, safety and operability.
Experience & Technical Expertise
Deep expertise in HV/MV electrical engineering including design and delivery of transmission lines, substations, switchgear, transformers, protection and control systems, and electrical balance‑of‑plant.
Strong track record across full‑cycle development and delivery of large‑scale electrical infrastructure, ideally within renewable energy, transmission or utility‑scale projects.
Experience interfacing with systems integration teams across network modelling, protection philosophy, control system strategy, grid connections and compliance.
Proven ability to negotiate and execute complex EPC contracts and manage procurement of major electrical packages.
Strong knowledge of relevant industry standards, codes, engineering guidelines and legislative requirements.
Experience managing complex stakeholder sets across geographies and project partnership structures.
Key Competencies & Behaviours
Action‑oriented with a sense of urgency, high energy and a can‑do attitude.
Effective communicator who listens attentively and provides timely, helpful information across all levels.
Strong project management skills with experience planning, organising and executing large‑scale infrastructure projects.
Builds constructive relationships and works collaboratively across diverse teams, contractors and stakeholder groups.
Comfortable managing ambiguity — calm, productive and solutions‑focused when the path forward is unclear.
Drives accountability, takes ownership and uses feedback to deliver continuous improvement.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering
Professional Engineer certification (desirable).
