Overview
The Parklife Metro Consortium is delivering a major rail infrastructure project in Greater Western Sydney under a Public Private Partnership. WeBuild, as a D&C Contractor member, will deliver the design and construction elements and is appointing a Senior Commissioning Engineer - Mechanical Systems.
Role Purpose
The Senior Commissioning Engineer - Mechanical Systems will lead the planning, coordination, and execution of testing and commissioning activities for mechanical plant, equipment, and associated control systems on a major rail/metro infrastructure project in NSW. The role ensures mechanical systems operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with contractual, statutory, and operational requirements before handover to operations.
Key Responsibilities
Planning & Coordination
Develop and manage commissioning strategies, schedules, and procedures for mechanical systems.
Coordinate commissioning interfaces between mechanical, electrical, control, and civil teams.
Liaise with design and construction teams to integrate commissioning requirements early in project delivery.
Engage OEMs, subcontractors, and suppliers to ensure timely delivery of commissioning milestones.
Execution & Supervision
Lead and supervise commissioning activities for mechanical systems including tunnel ventilation, station HVAC, hydraulic systems, escalators, lifts and fire protection systems.
Oversee functional, integration, performance, and endurance testing in line with approved procedures.
Troubleshoot technical and operational issues to minimise downtime and delays.
Safety & Compliance
Ensure all commissioning activities comply with WHS legislation, rail safety laws, and environmental requirements.
Verify that systems meet Transport for NSW (TfNSW), Sydney Metro, and Australian Standards prior to handover.
Participate in risk assessments, hazard and operability (HAZOP) studies, and safety in design workshops.
Documentation & Handover
Review and approve commissioning test plans, reports, and verification records.
Compile commissioning completion dossiers for client acceptance.
Assist with defect rectification and warranty testing post-handover.
Key Skills & Experience
Essential
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
8-10 years’ experience in testing and commissioning of mechanical systems on rail, metro, or large infrastructure projects.
Proven expertise with tunnel ventilation systems, HVAC, pumps, lifts/escalators, and fire suppression systems.
Familiarity with integrated control systems and SCADA interface testing.
Strong understanding of Australian Standards, Building Code of Australia, and TfNSW requirements.
Demonstrated experience in planning and delivering multidisciplinary commissioning programs.
Desirable
Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) or eligibility.
Experience on Sydney Metro or other Australian rail metro projects.
Knowledge of systems assurance, RAMS, and operational readiness processes.
Experience with asset handover systems and configuration management tools.
