Job Description
Establish and lead Ozcare's internal legal function and capability
Trusted advisor to the CEO and Board in a complex, highly regulated environment
Support sustainable growth while guarding mission, values and service excellence
Ozcare is a leading not-for-profit provider of aged care and community services across Queensland, supporting older people and families to live with dignity, connection and choice. With deep roots in community service and a strong alignment to the St Vincent de Paul mission, Ozcare exists to serve those most in need, guided by compassion, respect, justice and excellence.
An organisation of high trust, strong financial viability and sustained growth, Ozcare has completed multiple mergers since 2020 and continues to expand its services and impact. The organisation is immensely proud of the care it provides and the difference it makes in people’s lives every day. At its heart is a servant‑leader CEO, a values‑led culture, and a deep commitment to stewardship, governance and accountability in service of community.
About the Role
This is a newly created role offering a rare opportunity to build and shape Ozcare’s in‑house legal capability from the ground up as the organisation continues to grow in scale and complexity. Reporting through the Office of the CEO, and working closely with the CEO and Board, this role will provide independent, high‑quality strategic legal advice, corporate governance support, risk and assurance, and regulatory compliance.
The role is deliberately hands‑on and a visible leader within the organisation. You will provide pragmatic, service‑focused legal advice across a broad portfolio, while also establishing fit‑for‑purpose frameworks and processes, and day‑to‑day governance and company secretarial support. You will build trusted relationships internally and externally, work closely with the St Vincent’s Group and act as a key interface between the Board, management and external advisors.
Operating in a complex and highly regulated aged care environment, this role is central to ensuring Ozcare remains compliant, resilient and mission‑aligned, enabling growth, innovation and service excellence while never losing sight of the people and communities it serves.
Key Responsibilities
Provide strategic, pragmatic legal and governance advice to the CEO, Board and senior leaders in a complex, regulated environment
Establish and lead Ozcare’s in‑house legal function, including policies, frameworks and ways of working
Set up and manage a panel of external legal providers, ensuring quality, value and alignment
Fulfil statutory duties as Company Secretary, including maintaining corporate records, registers and regulatory compliance in accordance with the Corporations Act, ACNC requirements, Ozcare’s Constitution and other applicable legislation
Identify, manage and mitigate legal risk across contracts, operations, transactions and organisational change
Draft, review and negotiate a broad range of commercial, property and government contracts
Strengthen governance frameworks, policies and decision‑making through continuous improvement and capability‑building
Role‑model Ozcare’s mission and values, providing calm, trusted leadership during periods of growth and transformation
Work closely with St Vincent’s Group to align legal and governance approaches and build strong, trusted relationships across the organisation, grounded in service, integrity and respect
Operate with independence, sound judgement and discretion in an organisation of high public trust
About You
This is a relationship‑driven, service‑oriented position for a leader who is proud to support frontline impact and who genuinely resonates with Ozcare’s mission and values. To be successful in this role you will be a senior legal professional who combines technical excellence with humility, warmth and a genuine commitment to service. You enjoy being close to the organisation, value trust‑based relationships, and are motivated by purpose as well as professional challenge.
You will bring:
Tertiary qualification in law and admission to practice in Australia, with a current practising certificate
Minimum 10 years post‑admission experience in corporate and commercial law; property law experience highly desirable
Proven ability to provide strategic legal and governance advice at a senior level and demonstrated leadership in legal, risk and compliance functions
Strong understanding of statutory obligations, board governance and regulatory frameworks
Confidence engaging with Boards and senior leaders, with sound judgement and discretion
A hands‑on mindset, comfortable building capability while delivering practical advice
Strong relationship‑building skills and the ability to navigate complex stakeholder environments
Experience in regulated environments; aged care, healthcare or not‑for‑profit experience desirable but not essential
High integrity, professionalism and personal credibility, with a genuine alignment to Ozcare’s values
