Senior Embedded Engineer

📍 Sydney, Australia

Construction NextPlay

Job Description

Are you a senior embedded Linux engineer with real depth in Yocto? You know what you're doing. You've owned builds, shipped production systems, and debugged problems that most engineers never see. But you've wondered what it looks like when your embedded work powers the product, not just supports it. When you focus on one device instead of spreading across many clients or projects. Where you have the ownership and autonomy to drive technical decisions end to end.

If that sounds like you, keep reading.

The Company A product company building edge AI devices for commercial environments. Already deployed across thousands of sites globally, and growing fast. Around 50 people across Melbourne, Sydney, London and New York.

The engineering culture is hands on and direct. Process is light, ownership is high, and the embedded team works out of a proper lab in Melbourne CBD. Soldering stations, test rigs, racks of devices alongside the desks. They've just launched their next generation device and are scaling production globally.

The Role

Work directly on the embedded software stack running on ARM application processors (NXP i.MX8M Plus). BSP, device drivers, system services, boot chain. This is product work. What you build ships to thousands of customers globally.

Integrate hardware components including secure elements, camera functionality, and inter processor communication between the real time and application cores.

Improve the reliability of deployed devices through supervisory systems, watchdog controls, and fleet monitoring.

Build out the CI/CD and testing infrastructure for embedded, including hardware in the loop testing. This is one of the highest impact areas right now.

Lead your own technical projects end to end, from scoping through to shipping.

Be part of a team that's actively using AI assisted development tools and building the workflows to support them.

What You'll Bring

Deep experience with Yocto and embedded Linux. This is the foundation of the product. You've created layers, written recipes, and know your way around a complex build system. This is non-negotiable.

Solid experience with ARM application processors. The hardware runs on the NXP i.MX8M Plus, but if you've worked with comparable SoCs from Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, or similar, that translates directly.

Strong C/C++ skills and comfort working at the driver and system level.

An understanding of what it takes to ship and support real devices in production. OTA updates, fleet monitoring, field debugging. You've been through it.

Familiarity with CI/CD in an embedded context, or at least a strong opinion on how testing should work when you can't just spin up a container.

A pragmatic approach to process. It matters, but you're not waiting for a 40 page spec before you start building.

Openness to AI assisted development tools. You don't need to be an expert, but the team is actively using them and the expectation is you're open to working that way.

You don't need to have worked with this exact SoC or this exact CI/CD setup. But the embedded Linux fundamentals need to be there.

The Details

Ongoing, full time role

Competitive salary based on experience, with flexibility for the right person

ESOP offered

Melbourne CBD, hybrid with three days in the office. The whole team is there on the same days. Core hours are 10am to 2pm, so there's room to do school runs, attend appointments, or however else you want to structure your day.

If you want to work somewhere your embedded Linux expertise powers the product, not just supports it. Where what you build has direct impact and the engineers around you are experienced enough that you're still learning. We'd love to hear from you.
