Job Description

Principal Power Systems Engineer Energy Storage | Grid Integration | Power Systems Modelling | Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane Our client is a global leader in energy storage, hybrid solutions and advanced power system optimisation. Their mission is to enable a fully renewable energy future through the integration of cutting‑edge storage technologies, intelligent software, and flexible grid‑supporting infrastructure. With a strong footprint across APAC—particularly in Australia—they are expanding their technical team and seeking a highly experienced

Principal Power Systems Engineer

to support complex modelling, compliance and integration activities for inverter‑based resources.

This is a senior technical authority role designed for an engineer who excels in dynamic modelling, grid code interpretation, hybrid system analysis and stakeholder engagement.

The Opportunity As Principal Power Systems Engineer, you will drive the development and validation of advanced simulation models for large‑scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) and hybrid renewable assets. You will play a pivotal role in supporting customers, developers, network service providers and internal engineering teams throughout the full lifecycle of storage and hybrid projects—from feasibility and design through to commissioning and operations.

You will act as a key interface between software, hardware, grid compliance and project delivery teams, ensuring modelling and control strategies are aligned with customer needs and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities Customer and Project Support

Serve as the technical authority for customers, developers, utilities and network operators across APAC.

Support pre‑sales activities by developing technical solutions, contributing to tenders and presenting modelling and controls strategies.

Maintain technical continuity across project stages, ensuring compliance work translates into seamless delivery and handover.

Provide training and knowledge transfer to customer engineering teams on modelling assumptions, system behaviour and compliance standards.

Coordinate between customers and internal engineering groups to diagnose issues, propose solutions and ensure technical deliverables are met.

Modelling and Technical Development

Develop, validate and maintain dynamic models of BESS in simulation environments such as PSCAD, PSSE and DIgSILENT PowerFactory.

Optimise control and protection parameters to meet grid stability, voltage and frequency performance requirements.

Conduct hybrid plant assessments, including modelling of BESS integrated with solar PV and other renewable generators.

Translate simulation algorithms into automated software modules using Python or similar programming tools.

Grid Compliance and Documentation

Prepare and support Generator Performance Standard (GPS) studies, compliance documentation, test procedures and validation reports.

Liaise with internal and external stakeholders through R2 testing and post‑commissioning verification.

Maintain expertise in relevant grid standards and regulatory processes.

Continuous Improvement

Enhance internal modelling and compliance tools to improve efficiency and standardisation.

Identify lessons learned from customer projects and contribute to improved practices and design guidelines.

Mentor internal engineering teams and support capability building across the organisation.

About You You will be successful in this role if you bring:

A master’s degree or PhD in Power Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related field.

At least five years of experience in power system modelling, grid compliance or energy storage integration.

Strong knowledge of Australian grid connection processes, including GPS stages and technical requirements.

Expertise with tools such as PSCAD, PSSE and DIgSILENT PowerFactory.

Experience developing or validating GPS packages.

Proficiency in Python, MATLAB or related languages for model automation and tuning.

Excellent communication skills and the ability to work independently within a global team.

Desirable attributes include:

Practical experience with commissioning or modelling of inverter‑based resources.

Familiarity with grid compliance frameworks and network operator requirements.

Strong analytical skills and the ability to mentor junior engineers.

Daily Workflow Your typical day could include:

Responding to technical enquiries and supporting GPS milestones.

Running dynamic simulations and analysing performance against compliance criteria.

Participating in calls with AEMO, NSPs or project developers to resolve modelling issues.

Preparing reports, test plans and compliance documentation.

Supporting commissioning teams by ensuring model‑to‑field alignment during validation testing.

Contributing to internal tool development, automation and process optimisation.

If you are a highly skilled power systems specialist looking to influence the future of renewable grid integration and work on some of the most complex storage and hybrid projects in the region, we would welcome a conversation.
