Responsibilities

Provide medical leadership to the senior Safeguards Team, supporting innovative, collaborative, and best‑practice, time‑limited care for children and young people aged 0‑17 years experiencing acute mental distress.

Work closely with the Clinical Lead to build partnerships and ensure seamless provision of care for the population, including a significant Aboriginal community.

Actively participate in ongoing evaluation and development of the model of care.

Collaborate within the well‑established interdisciplinary Child Youth and Family Mental Health stream, contributing to teams such as the Whole Family Team and Perinatal Infant Mental Health Team.

Assist with the new Adolescent Mental Health Inpatient Unit currently being built, expected to open later in 2025.

Participate in a district‑wide CYF‑MH consultant after‑hours roster and, as negotiated with the Medical Director, may also include work in other parts of the Mental Health Service.

Selection Criteria

Registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and hold a Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand Colleges of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) or equivalent; Certificate of Advanced Training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry; current NSW driver’s licence.

Demonstrated expertise and experience in providing high‑quality mental health services in a psychiatry setting; commitment to person‑centred, recovery‑oriented, family‑inclusive, trauma‑informed, and needs‑adapted principles of care.

Ability to support and work in collaborative interprofessional contexts that include lived‑experience professionals; sound knowledge of psychiatry encompassing biological, psychological, social, cultural, and spiritual domains.

High level verbal and written communication skills, including capacity to communicate clearly, inclusively, and respectfully; word‑processing skills for expert documentation.

Commitment to teaching and supervision of medical staff, non‑medical colleagues, and students, consistent with contemporary best practice.

Values consistent with a senior medical practitioner providing mental health care across the life span and their social networks; evidence of high ethical and professional standards.

Experience in or capacity for supporting quality improvement and clinical governance activities; demonstrated commitment to high‑quality care provision in the public sector.

Familiarity with and support of basic, clinical, and applied research activities relevant to the needs of the Mental Health Service; ability to draw on evidence, guidelines, and quality improvement activities.
