Job Description

This is a fourteen (14) month fixed term, full-time position commencing ASAP with possible extension and/or permanency.

The Business and Customer Services (BCS) Directorate supports the objectives and outcomes of clients by providing value for money corporate services through skilled and motivated people. The BCS aims to deliver services within an environment of standardised systems and processes.

The Finance Services Branch provides accounts payable, accounts receivable, maintenance of the Department’s asset registers, credit card management, lease administration, debt recovery, general ledger and taxation services.

The Role The Accounts Processing and Taxation Team Leader oversees the accounts processing and taxation functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, Goods and Services Tax (GST), Fringe Benefit Tax (FBT), Pay As You Go (PAYG), taxation advice, purchase card administration, debt recovery and the Teacher Registration Board finance function. Additionally, they oversee the completion and lodging of all tax returns, particularly the FBT annual returns and GST monthly activity statements.

If successful, you will maintain a risk management-based oversight of BCS accounts processing and taxation related processes to minimise tax liability and comply with legislative requirements. Within this role you will undertake research and interpretation of new or amended legislation and assess its impact.

Eligibility

be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident or have a valid visa with relevant work rights for the term of the appointment.

consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit before you start.

possess Tertiary qualification in finance or accounting with progress toward a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or equivalent qualification and/or significant professional experience in this area.

Job specific criteria

Demonstrated substantial knowledge, understanding and application of financial legislation, policy and operational instruments, including the Australian Accounting Standards, A New Tax System (Goods and Services Tax) 1999, Fringe Benefit Tax Assessment Act 1986, Financial Management Act 2006, Regulations and Treasurer’s Instructions relevant to a large organisation with complex systems.

Demonstrated ability to think strategically including the ability to critically analyse information and build support for change initiatives whilst providing strong leadership.

Demonstrated ability to proactively achieve results including developing business and work plans that effectively distribute resources and talent to achieve the goals and using effective planning processes to translate goals.

Demonstrated ability to build and sustain productive relationships including the ability to build and communicate a culture of cooperation and collaboration, promoting a culture of delivering high quality customer service and negotiating clear performance standards whilst monitoring progress.
