Solution Architect with Australian Citizenship - Canberra - 12 months

The Solution Architect provides architecture leadership and technical design for complex ICT systems across traditional and cloud deployment models. The role spans all ICT domains and requires strong stakeholder engagement to translate business needs into secure, resilient and supportable solution designs, and to guide those designs through governance and delivery.

Canberra work location with hybrid working model based on hiring manager discretion.

Key duties and responsibilities

Lead the development of solution architectures and technical designs in collaboration with business and technical stakeholders.

Develop options analysis and recommend preferred solutions to support technical decision-making.

Prepare and present solution proposals for endorsement through architecture governance, including the Architectural Review Board (ARB).

Define and maintain reference architectures, target architectures, standards and decision instruments that guide consistent solution design.

Support delivery teams and projects to obtain architecture and design approvals and make technical decisions within the scope of approved designs.

Maintain and update architecture artefacts and reporting within the Institute’s enterprise architecture repository.

Contribute to continuous improvement of ICT architecture processes, governance and design standards.

Validate delivered solutions against approved architecture and design documentation to ensure alignment and prevent design drift.

Ensure security‑by‑design is embedded in all designs, and support security teams with risk, compliance and assurance artefacts.

Provide architecture input to procurement activities, including requirements, technical evaluation and due diligence of ICT solutions and services.

Essential criteria

Demonstrated strong architecture and design skills, including the ability to develop and communicate clear solution designs, options and architectural advice to support technical decision‑making.

Demonstrated substantial design experience across application, infrastructure and security domains, including integrated solutions that address resilience, availability, risk and compliance.

Demonstrated broad design experience across platform environments, including Microsoft, Linux‑based and cloud‑based Infrastructure‑as‑Code (IaC) deployments, both standalone and as part of hybrid implementations.

Demonstrated excellent communication and influencing skills, including the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly, engage a wide range of stakeholders, and drive sound architectural outcomes.

Qualifications and experience (expected)

Degree in ICT/Computer Science/Engineering (or equivalent relevant experience).

Proven experience designing complex solutions across hybrid environments (on‑prem and cloud).

Practical experience producing architecture artefacts such as options papers, HLD/LLD, integration/interface designs and non‑functional requirements.

Highly regarded

Experience in Australian Government or similarly regulated environments.

Familiarity with architecture frameworks and governance practices (e.g., TOGAF).

Experience working in Agile delivery environments.

Cloud platform experience (Azure preferred).

Prior experience supporting procurement activities and vendor evaluations.
