Cool Planet is seeking a full-time Senior Sustainability (ESG) Consultant for an on-site role located in Byron Bay. The Consultant will work closely with clients to assess, strategise, and implement ESG goals and initiatives. Responsibilities include conducting research and analysis, developing sustainability strategies, preparing reports and recommendations, and engaging key stakeholders.
The role requires collaboration with cross-functional teams to ensure successful execution of solutions that align with client objectives and sustainability goals.
Key responsibilities
1. Technical ESG delivery (core focus)
Delivery of complex sustainability and ESG projects, including:
Materiality assessments
Scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas accounting
Net zero strategies and decarbonisation roadmaps
ESG strategy development and governance frameworks
Impact measurement, analysis and reporting, through value chains and lifecycles
Structured and formal ESG reporting
2. Quality assurance and technical governance
Act as reviewer of ESG deliverables across the business
Sense check assumptions, methodologies, and outputs
Maintain internal technical standards, templates, and guidance
Reduce delivery, reputational, and regulatory risk
Support continuous improvement of ESG methodologies
3. Stakeholder management
Excellent client and stakeholder management skills is a must–have
Operate as a trusted advisor to senior client stakeholders
Lead client workshops and executive briefings
Translate technical ESG findings into client-relevant insights
Support account retention and expansion through high quality delivery
Manage complex or sensitive client and related party discussions
Timely delivery of projects to standards to excellence
4. Sales and pre-sales support
As a technical expert, this role supports growth in the identification, development and securing of new sales opportunities. It is expected that the role delivers meaningful new business opportunities and sales pipeline development.
Support proposal development, scoping, and pricing
Participate in senior client pitches where technical credibility is required
Advise on what is material, feasible, and commercially appropriate
Help shape ESG propositions aligned to market demand and regulation
5. Internal capability building
Provide technical guidance across project teams
Improve delivery efficiency and consistency
Contribute to internal knowledge sharing and methodology development

Skills and experience
Essential
5 to 10 years’ experience in sustainability, ESG, climate, or related advisory
Strong technical experience across climate and carbon reporting, materiality, and ESG strategy
Practical experience delivering regulated or compliance-heavy ESG work
Ability to translate technical ESG into business and financial language
Strong stakeholder facilitation and communication skills
Experience supporting new business development and complex proposal generation
Desirable
A strong understanding and willingness to learn mandatory climate reporting readiness assessments and compliance support
Experience working with boards and senior executives, from SME to corporate
Familiarity with assurance, audit, compliance, or risk disciplines
A strong understanding of life cycle assessment methodologies
