Job Description

Innovaero is an Australian aerospace engineering and drone manufacturing company delivering advanced unmanned systems for defence and commercial customers. The company designs, builds, and flight-tests sophisticated unmanned aerial platforms and is entering a strong growth phase as programs, teams, and international activity expand.

Role Description The Senior Electrical / Software Engineer will play a key role in the design, development, integration and support of Innovaero’s unmanned aerial systems and associated avionics. This position will lead the development of electrical architectures, embedded software and system-level integration, working closely with multidisciplinary engineering, production and test teams. The role will contribute across the full product lifecycle, from concept and design through to qualification, production support and in-service sustainment, within a regulated aerospace and defence environment.

Key Responsibilities

Lead the design and development of electrical and embedded software systems for UAS platforms and sub-systems.

Develop system architectures, schematics, wiring, interfaces and control software in accordance with aerospace standards.

Support integration, test, verification and validation of avionics, flight control and mission systems.

Provide technical leadership and mentoring to junior engineers and technicians.

Work closely with Mechanical, Systems, Manufacturing and Quality teams to ensure designs are production-ready and compliant.

Support certification and compliance activities in line with CASA and defence regulatory frameworks.

Troubleshoot and resolve complex electrical and software issues across development, production and in-service phases.

Contribute to documentation, design reviews and configuration management processes.

Note training will be provided on equipment where required.

Qualifications & Skills

Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Software Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or a related discipline.

Experience in embedded systems, avionics, control systems or safety‑critical software (defence or aerospace highly regarded).

Strong experience in electrical system design, embedded software development, and hardware/software integration.

Proficiency with schematic capture, PCB design tools, and embedded development environments.

Experience with real‑time operating systems, C/C++ or similar low‑level languages (Python/MATLAB desirable).

Knowledge of aerospace standards, certification processes, and regulated development environments (e.g. DO‑178, DO‑254, AS9100, CASA Part 21 – desirable).

Ability to work across the full engineering lifecycle: requirements, design, integration, test, and production support.

Strong problem‑solving skills with a hands‑on, pragmatic approach.

Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate in small, fast‑moving engineering teams.

Capability to obtain and maintain Australian security clearance.
