Senior Legal Counsel - Energy Infrastructure/Projects, Melbourne

📍 Melbourne, Australia

Legal Richmond Search

Job Description

Richmond Search has been exclusively briefed by a Melbourne-based energy infrastructure developer working at the intersection of renewables, grid‑scale storage and digital infrastructure. Backed by strategic partners, a significant client base and an impressive pipeline of complex projects, the business is building out their internal legal capability in preparation for a significant period of growth.

The role: This is a commercially‑focused position working closely with a reputable founder team who have deep experience in the Australian energy sector. You will operate autonomously and end‑to‑end across a range of transactions from project development, technology partnerships and JV structuring to institutional capital raising. This is a legal role with a real breadth of deal exposure rather than a narrow advisory function - but there is a strong level of support from external counsel.

Day to day: You will be heavily involved in driving transactions from first draft to execution working closely with the founder/management team and negotiating autonomously with strategic business partners. Your day to day will involve (among other things):

Transaction structuring and negotiation (including term sheets, heads of agreement, exclusivity deeds, NDAs, non‑circumvention and introducer arrangements, co‑development and development management agreements, JV / shareholders / unitholders agreements, and subscription / convertible instrument documentation)

Land, site control and project development documentation

SPV/trust/corporate structuring and governance documentation

Managing external counsel

Your background: You'll have 6–12 years PQE (this is a guide rather than a strict bracket) with a strong foundation in one or more of the following (gained in a reputable private practice or in‑house setting):

Projects/infrastructure

Project finance

Corporate/M&A

Domestic or international energy transition exposure (BESS, solar, wind) and/or data centre/digital infrastructure experience is highly desirable. Australian/New Zealand qualified candidates with overseas transactional experience from a jurisdiction such as the UK,US or elsewhere would be of great interest.

The right candidate: To succeed in this role, you will need:

Excellent bespoke drafting skills

A deep understanding of and the ability to capably navigate commercial risk

Comfort leading and driving transaction negotiations

To thrive in a fast‑paced, intellectually rigorous, founder‑led environment

A confident, proactive style - you will be driving outcomes, not just marking up documents.

On offer:

Competitive remuneration plus strong performance‑based bonus

A fast‑paced, collegiate and intellectually stimulating environment

The chance to learn from and work closely with an exceptional founder/management team

The opportunity to join a business at a critical time, poised for significant growth in the renewables sector

Career progression - significant opportunity to build out the legal function as the business continues its growth trajectory.
