Medical Director - Full Time or Part Time Negotiable The Aboriginal Health Council of South Australia Limited (AHCSA) is the peak body representing Aboriginal community-controlled health and substance misuse services in South Australia at state and national levels.

Our primary role is to be the ‘health voice’ for all Aboriginal people in South Australia. We achieve this by advocating for the community and supporting workers through our Member Services with appropriate Aboriginal health programs based on a holistic perspective of health.

This position is a shared Medical Director role commissioned by participating Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs). The ability to undertake travel to remote SA locations by road and/air.

AHCSA acts in a facilitative and administrative capacity and does not direct service-level priorities.

About the Role - Full Time or Part Time Negotiable

The Medical Director - General Practice provides senior clinical leadership and expert medical advice to participating Member Service ACCHO’s based on their service priorities.. The role supports high-quality, culturally safe primary health care by guiding best-practice clinical standards, contributing specialist general practice expertise, and strengthening the capability of clinicians delivering care within community settings.

The Medical Director works collaboratively with Member Service GP teams and to enhance models of care, improve health outcomes, and ensure that services remain person-centred, evidence-based, and aligned with the needs of Aboriginal communities. This includes advising on clinical governance, supporting continuous quality improvement, and contributing to service planning, general practice registrar supervision, clinical pathways, and risk management processes.

A key component of the role is building strong relationships with internal and external partners, including clinicians, executives, peak bodies, and government agencies to advocate for culturally appropriate primary health care and address barriers to care. The Medical Director provides high-level clinical input into sector initiatives, program development, workforce support, and policy advice to strengthen general practice services across the ACCH sector.

Key Responsibilities

Service-level Medical Director functions including clinical governance, GP workforce support, CQI, accreditation readiness and models of care.

Supporting comprehensive, person-centred primary health care approaches that respond to the needs of Aboriginal communities through advice and support of the medical and other clinical workforce.

Supporting best practice Aboriginal Community Controlled Models of Care.

Strengthening ACCHS service responses to key clinical and community health issues, including chronic disease management, acute presentations, communicable diseases, and broader determinants of health.

Maintaining and further developing clinical support and information networks for Member Services, including networks of medical practitioners and other health professionals across the ACCHS sector.

Contributing to the implementation and ongoing refinement of a consistent, sector-wide approach to Quality Improvement (QI).

Promoting the development and strengthening of robust clinical governance systems within ACCHSs in South Australia.

Supporting optimisation of Medicare through enhanced well person screening and chronic disease management systems.

Developing and maintaining strong relationships with government agencies, peak bodies, health service providers, and other key stakeholders.

Contributing to the development, sustainability, and support of the GP workforce within the ACCHS sector.

Essential Experience and Education

Legally qualified Medical Practitioner with current (or eligible for) specialist registration as a General Practitioner with the Medical Board of Australia (RACGP).

Postgraduate qualifications relevant to primary health care or further education within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, general practice, medical leadership, or public health (MPH ACRRM).

Specialist registration with the Medical Board of South Australia as a Fellow of the AustralasianFaculty of Public Health Medicine.

Demonstrated system-level clinical leadership in Aboriginal primary health care, including the design, implementation and governance of culturally safe service delivery models, health promotion, chronic disease management, preventive care, and continuous quality improvement to improve health outcomes and reduce disparities.

Proven ability to work strategically across complex stakeholder environments, including ACCHSs, community organisations, health professionals, government and peak bodies, to evaluate service effectiveness, negotiate improvements, and strengthen Aboriginal-led, community-responsive health systems.

Demonstrated ability in delivering health services that are culturally safe, responsive, and respectful of the culture, values and ways of doing business with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Experience in data analysis from the Aboriginal primary health care perspective.
