We are seeking an experienced and hands‑on
Head of Bookkeeping and Payroll
to lead a small team to deliver bookkeeping and payroll services to small to medium‑size businesses who don’t have the resources or time to manage everyday financial tasks. This is a leadership position for someone who thrives on both strategic oversight and rolling up their sleeves when needed. You will manage a small team (onshore and offshore), ensure compliance and maintain high standards of accuracy and efficiency. Beyond day‑to‑day operations, you’ll play a key role in onboarding new clients, preparing proposals and advising on tailored solutions for their bookkeeping and payroll needs.
What You’ll Be Doing:
Oversee all bookkeeping and payroll functions for a portfolio of clients
Ensure compliance with Australian tax regulations and reporting requirements
Prepare and lodge BAS statements (must be BAS registered)
Manage and mentor a small team across onshore and offshore locations
Handle onboarding of new clients, including initial setup and system configuration
Prepare proposals and present solutions to prospective clients
Maintain strong client relationships and provide advice on best‑fit services
Monitor and improve processes for efficiency and accuracy
Stay up to date with legislative changes impacting payroll and bookkeeping
We’re Looking for Someone Who:
Extensive experience in bookkeeping and payroll
Accounting degree is nice to have but not essential
A registered BAS Agent
Proficient in Xero and related integrations
Demonstrated ability to lead and develop a small team
Strong attention to detail and problem‑solving skills
Excellent communication skills with the confidence to engage clients in targeted conversations
Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities
