Role description Working closely with our State and Discipline Leads, you will take a primary and influential leadership role on national projects within the Rail Traction Power sector, providing specialist Earthing, Bonding and Electrolysis or Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) design input. You will be a specialist in the field of Earthing, Bonding and electrolysis design, able to provide advice and guidance to the wider team and to the client providing suitable E&B solutions on projects.

Part of the role is to mentor and provide technical guidance to upcoming engineers, assisting the growth of the team from the inside while delivering and providing quality assurance on significant national projects. You will also receive support and training to further develop your skills and career.

Role accountabilities

Preparing and delivering complex designs, reports, proposals and presentations to clients in the following areas:

Earthing, bonding and electrolysis risk assessment

Earthing system analysis and design

Earthing simulation for design touch‑step voltages and LFI studies

Lightning protection system design

Bonding design on DC systems

Power flow and Electrical fault studies and safety assessments

Insulation Coordination studies

Input to rail and power substation system design, including preparation of single line diagrams, layouts, circuit diagrams, earthing and bonding schematics, and coordination of the design with communication, civil, structural and mechanical design disciplines

Input to Protection systems analysis, setting, specification and design

Input to Electromagnetic studies and EMC management

Production of electrical safety case and safety compliance documents

Manage the delivery of specialised components of projects, advising on the best solutions and the most effective team to achieve this.

Provide technical expertise and overview to client and stakeholders, assisting clients through technical decision‑making and providing alternative options/solutions where opportunities exist or to address project changes.

Working in collaboration with interfacing design disciplines to ensure coordination and the integrity of the overall design.

Govern technical reviews and quality assurance activities for projects, documentation, processes and practices.

Use technical knowledge to identify and realise new client opportunities and to provide technical input into the bidding process.

Lead the technical development of staff, coaching and mentoring on technical issues.

Qualification & Experience

10+ years’ experience as a power systems engineer, with at least 7 years recent experience in earthing and bonding design.

Tertiary qualification in electrical/power engineering, preferably chartered engineering and RPEQ status.

Excellent spoken and written communication skills including a working knowledge of MS Office.

Highly regarded skills include:

Experience in a design consultancy role

Demonstrated ability to lead design teams and deliver earthing and power system design solutions

Experience in AC and DC railway earthing, bonding and electrolysis design

Experience of working with traction power system modelling software tools

Experience of CDEGS earthing system software for earthing and induction modelling

Experience of ETAP or equivalent software tool for power system modelling

Ability to develop studies in ATP/PSCAD/EMTP

Experience in developing EMC studies and management plans

Ability to develop maintenance strategies and procedures, commissioning plans and documentation

Note: Not all these skills are expected; training will be given to develop these.
