The Director of Finance provides high-level direction and strategic influence across the organisation's Finance team and wider Business Services Division, and is responsible for the MDBA's financial accounting and management accounting teams.

The role works collaboratively with the Chief Financial Officer to deliver an efficient and effective finance function. The role requires effective collaboration and stakeholder engagement skills and a well-developed understanding of how quality financial information, and fit-for-purpose finance processes and policies contribute to organisational performance. The role works closely with other parts of the Business Services Division, other agencies of the Australian Government, the Basin States and wider stakeholders.

The key duties of the position include

Work alongside the Chief Financial Officer to provide strategic direction to the agency, providing insight on the overall financial position and forecast performance.

Oversee and lead the financial accounting and management accounting teams, taking responsibility for coordinating and facilitating team priorities, performance and outcomes. This includes leadership and operational oversight on:

Accounts payable and receivable functions

Asset management

Internal and external budget processes

Finance business partner function

Financial Statements preparation processes

Routine financial reporting

Oversee and lead the system administrators responsible for MDBA's financial management systems.

Be responsible for influencing and developing strategy, policies and operational practices in support of the agency's financial responsibilities.

Design, manage, and deliver financial compliance communications, advice, and training to internal stakeholders.

Oversee and provide quality assurance for the preparation briefings and reporting materials for the senior executive, and relevant internal and external stakeholders.

Attend and assist with reports to the audit and risk committee, sub-committees other governance functions, including the presentation of such reports.

Assist with written material including business cases, Cabinet submissions, Senate Estimate submissions, Ministerial and agency briefs, and corporate documentation.

Be responsible for maintaining awareness of current developments in the fields of financial and management accounting in government, anticipating the impact on the work area, and implementing changes in response to developments.
