Development Director – Shopping Centres (Planning & Construction)

Location: National (applicants from all states considered) — frequent travel to sites

Fawkner Property is a proudly family owned Australian business with over $5bn of funds under management across a property portfolio that spans Regional, Sub Regional and Neighbourhood shopping centres along with other essential service real estate assets including childcare and fuel and convenience. We are seeking an experienced Development Director to lead major projects nationwide.

What you’ll do End‑to‑end delivery of shopping centre developments: feasibility, approvals, design, procurement, construction and handover.

Develop and manage development briefs, master planning, staging and phasing to minimise disruption in operating centres.

Lead statutory planning and approvals, coordinate technical studies and negotiate with relevant authorities.

Appoint and manage architects, engineers and consultants; drive design reviews, value engineering.

Establish procurement strategies (D&C, GMP, CM, packages), run RFPs/tenders and manage commercial negotiations and contracts.

Oversee budgets, cashflow, change control, progress claims and project P&L; monitor KPIs and implement recovery plans.

Supervise construction logistics, safety, commissioning, defect remediation and tenant interfaces.

Coordinate closely with Leasing, Asset Management, Operations, Marketing, Finance and Legal; prepare investment cases, board papers and risk registers.

Implement quality assurance initiatives.

Coach and develop project teams; promote a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.

About you Bachelor’s in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, Urban Planning or related (postgraduate property/business qualification preferred).

Proven track record delivering large projects to completion, strong commercial acumen, and hands on experience with procurement, contract negotiation and claims management.

Deep knowledge of planning approvals, building codes, fire/life safety, accessibility and retail operations.

Proficient in program & cost control (Primavera/MS Project), design coordination and buildability.

Reporting line & team Reports to Fund Manager, Fawkner Property

Direct reports: Project Managers, Facilities Managers, Tenant Coordination team and external consultants.
