The role & team
Specsavers is a complex, purpose-led organisation operating at scale across Australia and New Zealand. We are seeking an accomplished Head of Legal to provide strategic legal leadership, trusted counsel to senior executives, and stewardship of legal risk in a dynamic retail and healthcare environment.
Reporting to the Legal & Risk Director, this role combines law, governance, and commercial decision-making. It offers the opportunity to shape legal strategy, influence business outcomes, and lead a high-performing legal team supporting a diverse stakeholder group, including senior leadership, Store Partners, and the ANZ Board.
As Head of Legal, you will be accountable for the delivery of the Legal function’s strategy and annual plan, ensuring Specsavers meets its legal and regulatory obligations while enabling the business to operate confidently and commercially.
The skills we are looking for
Executive-level legal advisory capability across complex commercial, regulatory, governance, and corporate matters
Proven leadership and development of high-performing legal teams, with a strong focus on capability building, succession planning, and professional standards
Strong employment law expertise, providing practical and strategic guidance on workplace relations, Modern Award & National Employment Standards (NES) compliance, employee disputes, and broader regulatory obligations
Advanced contract governance and dispute management expertise, including oversight of significant commercial agreements and dispute resolution
Strong risk identification and mitigation capability, with sound judgment aligned to organisational risk appetite and brand protection
Expertise in advertising, media, trade practices compliance, and competition law, with the ability to deliver clear, practical legal advice
Expertise in privacy, data protection, and digital technology, offering practical and reliable advice
Proven background in franchising and legal matters related to multi-unit network wide retail operations
Highly effective cross-functional partnering skills, particularly with HR, WHS, Property, Marketing and Retail leadership on sensitive and high-risk issues
Demonstrated expertise in managing and briefing external counsel to achieve high-quality, cost-effective outcomes
Continuous improvement mindset, with the ability to streamline legal processes and enhance efficiency in a fast-paced environment
