Principal Legal Officer
Department of Customer Services, Open Data and Small and Family Business

Your Responsibilities
Provide strategic, independent and professional legal advice and documentation to all levels of the department with focus on commercial and public law matters (contracts, IP, workplace, employment, regulatory compliance, disputes, right to information, privacy).
Ensure contemporary legal issues are identified and applied effectively when advising on government policies and initiatives.
Facilitate and manage development of efficient policy and legislative frameworks for the department.
Lead projects in research, policy development, legislative development and evaluation activities, in accordance with best practice.
Develop professional, positive working relationships with internal stakeholders and external stakeholders such as Crown Law and legal panel firms.
What We Are Looking For
Ability to provide high‑level strategic independent professional legal advice to executive officers on complex commercial law matters.
Capacity to manage legal projects within agreed timeframes and requirements.
Well‑developed research, negotiation and interpersonal skills, with proven ability to communicate orally and in writing and network across all levels of government and industry.
Comprehensive understanding or quick acquisition of issues and emerging trends relevant to the department and implications for government legal practice in commercial law.
Willingness to work in a dynamic team, support team members and broader department work.
Prior government experience is not essential; candidates with broad commercial law experience, ideally in a private law firm, are welcome.
