What will you do
As a Principal Geotechnical Engineer and professional engineer, your tasks will be as follows:
Oversee and participate in the production of studies, engineering designs, modelling, analysis, calculations, design details, drawings and engineering reports for a range of projects relating to the fields of civil, coastal and maritime engineering. Identify issues and problems; develop appropriate and innovative solutions.
Planning geotechnical investigations, and undertake interpretation, including assessment of reactive and collapsing soils.
Undertake and review geotechnical and foundation designs of projects such as port and harbour works, quay walls, wharves, jetties, dolphins, abutments, pavements, retaining walls, seawalls, revetments, navaids and the like.
Prepare technical documents such as feasibility studies, Basis of Design, design reports and technical notes.
Carrying out inspections, attendance on site and laboratory for testing and preparation of reports.
Prepare work execution plans around undertaking such projects to plan the appropriate level of resources and scheduling to complete the works in the required time frame.
Manage and deliver multiple small to medium projects following Company systems to meet project requirements, on time and within budget.
Supervise and mentor less experienced engineers and other professionals (eg. drafters) in technical works as well as assist in professional development activities.
Prepare commercial, technical and financial proposals and/or provide inputs for larger multi-disciplinary projects relevant for geotechnical engineering scope.
Assist in business development (meeting potential or actual clients, writing capability statements and proposals and preparing marketing materials).
Participate in the development of client base throughout Australia through the interaction with clients including strong face to face engagement.
Consult and liaise with colleagues to share information, lessons learnt, innovative approaches to problem solving, and the like. Identify issues problems and develop appropriate and innovative solutions, involving other staff inputs as needed. Keep up-to-date with the latest developments and technical innovations in the discipline.
Undertake self-learning and continuing professional development (CPD) as required by Engineers Australia (50 hours minimum equivalent per annum).
Contribute and share experience to the company wide geotechnical knowledge group.
Other Duties
Carry out any duties, which your Line Manager may reasonably request within the broad parameters of your role.
Participate, both as trainee and trainer, in in-house training in company procedures, workplace safety instruction and various site safety courses as required.
You will also work with the broader Maritime APAC business line to support initiatives and help develop opportunities across the region.
The role can be based in either Sydney/Brisbane/Newcastle, however, travel to our other Australian offices and project locations will be required. In addition, you may be required to travel to some of our other offices/project location in the Asia Pacific Region to promote connectivity across the unit.

Civil Engineering or Geology Degree – essential
Specialisation in Geotechnical Engineering – essential
Background in Maritime Engineering projects – essential
Majority of project experience in Australia – desirable
Minimum of 12 years experience in Geotechnical Engineering – essential
Proficient in geotechnical engineering software such as PLAXIS, SlopeW, Wallap – essential
Experience with writing proposals, planning and delivering multiple small to medium sized projects – essential
Chartered with Engineers Australia – essential. RPEQ – desirable.
Industry participation through PIANC and Engineers Australia – desirable.
