Job Description

This is an executive opportunity to contribute to a high performing purpose‑driven organisation that plays a vital role in delivering State and local government elections. The VEC is responsible for promoting public awareness and understanding of electoral issues whilst maintaining a supporting environment that encourages professional development and provides opportunities.

About the role As Director, Finance/Deputy CFO, you'll lead the VEC's financial operations and shape its long‑term financial strategy. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, you'll manage budgeting, forecasting, reporting, and compliance to ensure financial sustainability and alignment with organisational priorities. You'll act as a trusted advisor to the Executive Leadership Team, providing strategic financial insights to guide decision‑making. This senior leadership role also includes managing a small team, driving continuous improvement, and representing the VEC in external forums.

Key accountabilities

Foster a positive workplace culture by aligning operational plans with strategic goals and supporting staff development

Provide clear, strategic leadership to the Finance team, leading change and promoting collaboration across the organisation

Oversee financial operations and reporting, including audited statements, monthly reports, and compliance with government requirements

Lead the development of the annual budget and four‑year financial roadmap, offering critical analysis and recommendations

Manage external audits and ensure timely delivery of statutory financial statements

Build strong relationships with stakeholders, including government departments and external partners

Deliver high‑quality financial advice to the Executive Leadership Team to support strategic decisions

What we're looking for

Proven ability to turn complex financial strategies into actionable plans and manage organisational risk

Extensive experience across finance functions, ideally in the public sector, with a track record of leading high‑performing teams

Strong stakeholder engagement and influencing skills, with the ability to negotiate and gain commitment from senior leaders

Exceptional communication skills to present complex financial information clearly to diverse audiences

Highly developed analytical and problem‑solving skills, with a commitment to accuracy and compliance

Degree in accounting, business, or finance, and CPA, IPA or CA qualification with extensive senior finance experience

What you'll get in return

VPS Grade 7.1 - $188,298 - $210,891 + Super (remuneration offered in line with experience and skills)

Ongoing, Full Time
