Senior Legal Officer Branch: Legal and Legislative Services Division: Professional Standards and Conduct Salary: Level 4 (Specified Calling), $146,998 - $157,135 per annum (pro‑ratio) (PSCA

Role This is a permanent full‑time position commencing in January. It is anticipated that interviews will be conducted in the week commencing 8 December. The Legal and Legislative Services Directorate provides advice to the Department on legal and legislation matters. The Directorate deals with, and on behalf of the Department, provides advice about various sensitive legal issues, complaints, administrative law, legislation issues, insurance and claims against the Department.

The Senior Legal Officer provides high‑quality strategic legal advice and information to the General Counsel, Director General, Corporate Executive, State Solicitor’s Office and stakeholders, as required. They monitor and undertake research on complex legal issues that may impact on the education sector and report accordingly. If successful, you will assist the General Counsel with reviewing and developing legislation including, providing legal advice on drafting of legislation or amendments. Within this role you will coordinate complex legal cases, including matters relating to child sexual abuse, coronial inquiries, discrimination and negligence. Additionally, you will be expected to build effective relationships and liaise at a senior management level with the State Solicitor’s Office and other key stakeholders on legal issues.

Eligibility

Be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident or have a valid visa with relevant work rights for the term of the appointment.

Consent to obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit before you start.

Be admitted to practice law in Western Australia.
