Job Description

This role at the forefront of government law in Tasmania calls for an experienced lawyer with outstanding people leadership, organisation and legal skills.

The Office of Crown Solicitor provides expert commercial law services to the State of Tasmania, its instrumentalities and agencies. The Crown Solicitor leads the Office and is one of four Principals within Crown Law, including the Solicitor-General, State Litigator and the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Leading and managing a team of more than 30 staff and supported by the Director Crown Law, the Crown Solicitor is responsible for the delivery of high-quality advice, negotiation and drafting of agreements in a range of commercial, property and leasing transactions, major infrastructure and construction projects, financing, procurement and intellectual property matters. The Crown Solicitor reports to the Secretary of the Department of Justice and acts independently in matters of professional judgment.

As the leader of an expert team and assisted by four direct reports, the Crown Solicitor is responsible for the guidance, professional development, mentoring, motivation and performance appraisal of team members, the efficient allocation and performance of work and implementation of contemporary legal practice and knowledge management systems.

Effective and timely stakeholder engagement is important: with the Department of Justice, especially the Secretary, State instrumentalities and agencies, the other Crown Law principals and external legal counsel, parties and advisors. Clear communication skills, plain English drafting and a flexible, commercially realistic approach is essential, as is extensive expertise in at least one of commercial, infrastructure, property or construction law.

This position is best suited to a service-oriented, experienced practitioner who enjoys motivating and supporting staff to provide excellent client service in a fast-moving, busy legal team . A track record in acting for government clients is desirable; most important is demonstrated ability to grasp the nuances of government policy, processes and drivers.

Eligibility for admission to practise in the State of Tasmania is essential.

Level: $398,976 plus 12% super, a private plated motor vehicle and relocation assistance (if applicable).

Term: Fixed term for a period of up to 5 years

Location: Hobart
