Overview
Paediatric Intensive Care Consultant – Regional Queensland
We are seeking an experienced
Senior Staff Specialist / Staff Specialist in Paediatric Intensive Care
to join a high-acuity service that is critical to the health of children across regional Queensland. This is a
full-time, 12-month appointment
with potential for secondment to a tertiary paediatric ICU for those seeking further sub-specialty experience.
Responsibilities
Provide specialist care for critically ill infants and children in a
5-bed PICU/PHDU
with surge capacity for up to six ventilated patients
Manage a diverse, complex casemix including medical, surgical, trauma, and oncology cases
Participate in retrievals from a wide regional network covering Cairns, Mackay, Mount Isa, and surrounding regions
Supervise and mentor junior doctors and trainees, fostering a strong culture of learning
Engage in quality improvement, research, and service development initiatives

Over 300 PICU/PHDU admissions annually, with 80% emergency presentations — ensuring a stimulating clinical environment
Accredited for both Foundation and Elective Training by the College of Intensive Care Medicine
Access to a wide range of paediatric subspecialties including ENT, neurosurgery, oncology, and advanced respiratory and renal support
Opportunity to participate in neonatal retrievals and collaborate closely with NICU teams and paediatric cardiology services
Potential to negotiate a rotational secondment to a major tertiary children’s hospital for additional exposure and professional development

About You
Fellowship of the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM) or equivalent
Specialist registration (or eligibility) with AHPRA
Demonstrated experience in paediatric intensive care medicine
Commitment to teaching, clinical governance, and continuous improvement
