About the Team You’ll join our Systems Engineering function, a core pillar of our engineering structure, alongside Software & Architecture Leads. The team integrates diverse technologies to deliver secure, high‑assurance solutions supporting Australia’s Defence and Intelligence communities. We operate in complex, regulated environments where precision, traceability, and disciplined engineering practices are critical to mission success.

About the Role We are seeking a Lead Systems Engineer to provide end-to-end technical leadership across the full systems lifecycle. The role is accountable for architectural integrity, ensuring complex software and ICT components are coherently designed, integrated and verified to meet performance, security and compliance requirements. The position provides technical oversight, drives systems assurance, and enables delivery confidence across multidisciplinary teams.

You will operate as a senior engineer, guiding system design, requirements management, verification activities, and technical decision‑making. Working closely with the Software Lead, Architecture Lead, and Project Managers, you will ensure alignment between system intent, technical implementation, and client outcomes.

This is a hands‑on leadership role requiring both deep systems engineering expertise and the ability to influence across multidisciplinary teams.

What You’ll Do This role provides systems engineering leadership across multiple Agile delivery teams, ensuring architectural integrity, integrated delivery and compliance by:

Providing technical leadership across the systems engineering lifecycle, ensuring requirements, design, integration, verification, and validation activities are executed to a high standard

Leading requirements elicitation, traceability, and verification activities to ensure system outcomes meet technical, operational, and security obligations

Overseeing system integration across software, ICT components, ensuring architectural integrity and performance alignment

Leading and contributing to system reviews, technical risk assessments, and design decision forums

Defining and maintaining system architectures (predominantly software‑intensive), ensuring alignment to agreed enterprise standards, identifying technical risks early and influencing mitigation strategies to protect quality and delivery outcomes

Preparing, reviewing, and assuring engineering artefacts to ensure completeness, compliance, and decision support value

Collaborating closely with the Software Lead, Architecture Lead, and Project Managers to maintain alignment between system intent, technical execution, and client objectives

Mentoring engineers and helping uplift systems engineering discipline across the function

Contributing technical input to tender responses and solution development activities

What You’ll Bring We are seeking a Lead Systems Engineer who combines technical depth with integration leadership.

Extensive experience across the full Systems Engineering lifecycle including requirements, architecture alignment, integration, verification, and validation

Demonstrated experience integrating complex software‑intensive systems in secure or regulated environments

Strong knowledge of systems engineering standards and best practice frameworks

Experience contributing to or leading system reviews and verification activities

Proven ability to produce high‑quality engineering artefacts and decision documentation

Strong stakeholder engagement capability across technical and non‑technical audiences

Experience mentoring engineers and uplifting engineering discipline

Practical understanding of security design principles and Defence compliance requirements

Ability to identify technical risk early and influence mitigation strategies

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related technical discipline; or equivalent experience

INCOSE Systems Engineering Professional (SEP) or equivalent highly regarded

Postgraduate qualification in Systems Engineering desirable

Eligibility and willingness to obtain and maintain an Australian Defence security clearance essential
