Head of Unit – Emergency Department

About the Role
A senior Emergency Medicine specialist is sought to lead a high‑performing regional Emergency Department. Working closely with senior clinical leaders and the Emergency Department Nurse Unit Manager, the Head of Unit will provide strategic and operational leadership to support high‑quality patient care, multidisciplinary team development, and strong clinical governance. A key focus will be preparing the service for the new, expanded Emergency Department opening in 2027. This role combines clinical practice with impactful leadership during a significant redevelopment phase.
Key Responsibilities
Provide visible senior clinical leadership across the Emergency Department
Oversee operational performance, service planning and resource management
Mentor and supervise FACEMs, trainees, HMOs, interns and medical students
Strengthen multidisciplinary team collaboration across acute services
Lead clinical governance, patient safety and quality improvement initiatives
Support education, research and service innovation
Guide planning and transition into the new 2027 Emergency Department
About You
You are a senior Emergency Medicine specialist who brings:
Medical qualification and specialist registration with AHPRA
FACEM fellowship
Broad emergency care experience, including adult, paediatric and trauma
Senior leadership experience (highly desirable)
Strong team‑building and communication skills
Experience in clinical teaching and supervision
Commitment to high‑quality patient care and a supportive staff culture
Located 112km from Melbourne, this 785-bed hospital has approximately 4000 staff, and there are 13 off‑site facilities in the surrounding area.
