Principal Primary Engineer

Principal Primary Electrical Engineer – Power & Renewables Melbourne Are you a senior Primary Engineer ready to step into a true technical leadership role across Australia’s most complex grid and renewable energy projects?

Our client is a specialist power engineering consultancy supporting developers, utilities and EPC contractors with the integration of large-scale energy assets into the National Electricity Market. With a strong project pipeline across EHV substations, wind, solar and BESS, they are looking to appoint a Principal Primary Electrical Engineer to act as a senior technical authority within the business.

The Role This is a high-level consulting position where you will:

Lead primary engineering input across EHV/HV substations and transmission interfaces

Provide SME-level technical advice on utility‑scale wind, solar and BESS projects

Review and sign off on designs, calculations, specifications and technical reports

Lead electrical studies including fault levels, arc flash, earthing, insulation coordination, load flow and energisation studies

Support feasibility, option studies and due diligence work

Act as a trusted advisor to developers, EPCs, OEMs and network service providers

Mentor and guide junior and mid‑level engineers

You will work across the full project lifecycle, from early‑stage development through to detailed design and grid compliance.

What We’re Looking For

15+ years’ experience in the Australian power sector

Strong background in EHV substation primary systems

Proven involvement in large-scale renewable energy projects

Consulting experience working with utilities or major infrastructure clients

Deep knowledge of Australian Standards, NER and NSP requirements

Chartered (CPEng) status

RPEQ and/or RPEV (or eligibility)

Most importantly, you bring strong technical judgement, commercial awareness and confidence in client‑facing environments.
