Job Description

The Opportunity The opportunity exists for an accomplished research leader to establish and lead a new preclinical paediatric cancer immunology program within the WA Kids Comprehensive Cancer Centre.

The WA Comprehensive Kids Cancer Centre integrates the clinical excellence delivered at Perth Children’s Hospital and the research expertise of The KidsResearch Institute Australia and The University of Western Australia. The KidsResearch Institute Australia delivers the Centre’s laboratory research arm via its cancer research teams and works alongside clinicians to improve childhood cancer outcomes. Our vision is for a future where all kids with cancer survive and thrive.

This role will drive high‑quality, innovative research into cancer–immune crosstalk in early life, with a strong focus on translation and improving outcomes for children with cancer. The Head will provide scientific, strategic and people leadership while building a collaborative, impactful research program aligned with the Centre and Institute’s priorities.

You will be responsible for the conception, delivery and leadership of a comprehensive paediatric cancer immunology research program. You will independently manage research projects, funding and people, while fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration and psychological safety.

Key responsibilities include:

Designing and conducting innovative, high-quality preclinical research in paediatric cancer immunology.

Leading and translating research projects, ensuring robust experimental design, ethical compliance and reproducibility.

Publishing high-impact research and disseminating findings through peer‑reviewed journals and conferences.

Initiating and leading competitive grant applications and managing research budgets.

Establishing and maintaining strong collaborations with internal and external partners.

Leading, mentoring and supervising research staff and students.

Representing the research group and Institute on committees, networks and at scientific and community events.

Championing workplace health, safety and wellbeing within the research environment.

Conveniently based at Perth Children’s Hospital, this is a full time, ongoing position.

About You You are a highly motivated and collaborative research leader with a strong track record in paediatric cancer or immunology research and a passion for improving outcomes for children.

You will bring:

A PhD in cancer immunology, molecular biology or a related discipline.

Demonstrated experience using mouse models and immunology-based techniques.

Strong expertise in immunology, cell biology and preclinical research methodologies.

A proven track record of high-quality publications and research translation.

Experience leading projects, securing funding and managing research budgets.

Demonstrated ability to supervise, mentor and develop junior researchers and students.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

The ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative, multidisciplinary research environment.
