Job Description
Cleveland Youth Detention Centre is a purpose-built facility to accommodate young adolescents. The Centre admits young people from the ages of 10 years to 17 years. The Health Centre's role is to provide therapeutic interventions to enhance the young person's capacity by providing appropriate primary health programs and clinical interventions whilst in detention. The model of care is based on an ambulatory service providing 24/7 nursing care. Governance of the detention centre is by the Department of Youth Justice, Employment, Small Business and Training and health services are provided by the THHS underpinned by a memorandum of understanding.
The Senior Medical Officer provides regular clinic sessions during the week, with referral to specialist clinics / services within the Townsville HHS. Other visiting services include Oral Health, North Queensland Forensic Adolescent Mental Health, Sexual Health, Education Queensland, Department of Justice and Attorney General, and Youth Justice.

About your opportunity
The role of the Senior Medical Officer (SMO) is to provide high quality primary care clinical and non-clinical services on a sessional basis to an adolescent population. This includes working collaboratively in a multidisciplinary care team.
The role is primarily general practice based, with a patient population that has a high burden of chronic diseases, substance misuse and complex psychosocial issues.
The SMO will work with supporting services including North Queensland Adolescent Forensic Mental Health Service, Oral Health Service, Sexual Health Service in the delivery of a high standard of clinical care in accordance with general practice and guidelines and Townsville Hospital and Health Service (THHS) policies and procedures.
This role would suit a VR General Practitioner or FRACGP preferred, who has experience in dealing with complex patients and who has a commitment to providing effective and efficient evidence-based care. Sessions are negotiable and can fit around private practice responsibilities.
Requirements
The successful applicant must hold general AHPRA registration and hold advanced qualifications such as FRACGP relevant to the role. It is intended that the successful applicant will be able to demonstrate the ability to supervise junior staff.
