About The Team
AEMO’s System Design division is responsible for planning the power system in the context of unprecedented transformation. The rapid transition to renewable energy generation and electrification of many sectors (transport, industry etc) has seen sharp rises in proposed transmission connection projects. The Onboarding and Connections Group manages AEMO’s end to end process for connecting and registering generators into the National Electricity Market.
About The Role
With more than 160 GW of new generation to connect in the next 30 years, the Senior Engineer will play a key role in enabling integration of a diverse range of technologies, including onshore wind, offshore wind, hydro and solar generation, battery storage systems, and hydrogen plants.
Role
On a day-to-day basis, you will work closely with network service providers, generation developers, investors, equipment manufacturers, consultants, and AEMO teams. As part of your role, you will:
Lead technical assessments for assigned projects, ensuring compliance with NEM standards.
Assess and integrate new generation plants using sound engineering judgement.
Act as the main technical contact for stakeholders and project partners.
Deliver quality modelling and technical studies with evidence-based analysis.
Share technical knowledge and mentor junior engineers.
Build industry relationships through project site visits and professional forums.
What You Will Be Doing
Deliver engineering assessments and technical advice for generator connection projects, from initial assessment through to commissioning.
Collaborate with clients and stakeholders to resolve technical issues and ensure efficient project delivery.
Provide evidence-based technical analysis and documentation to support decision-making.
Offer expert guidance on performance standards, system stability, and commissioning processes.
Mentor junior engineers, sharing technical knowledge and reviewing project work.
Communicate technical concepts effectively to internal and external stakeholders, enhancing AEMO’s reputation.
What You Will Bring To The Role
Tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline relevant to power systems analysis.
Proven experience developing, supporting, and leading medium to large technical project teams on medium to large projects.
Extensive experience managing generator connection processes, including assessment and resolution of generator and power system performance issues.
Strong negotiation skills for resolving complex technical issues among diverse stakeholders.
Understanding of commercial and legal considerations for large-scale infrastructure projects and generation development.
