Overview
This is an outstanding opportunity for an experienced and strategic General Counsel โ Legal & Compliance to lead the legal, compliance, governance, and dispute resolution functions within a growing financial services organisation. Reporting directly to the Chief Legal Officer, you will play a key role in ensuring the organisation operates within the highest standards of governance, ethics, and regulatory compliance.
The position offers significant scope to influence strategy, manage risk, and provide trusted legal counsel to the Board and senior leadership team. You are a seasoned legal leader with extensive experience in financial services and a deep understanding of the regulatory landscape.
You combine commercial acumen with strong governance expertise and a pragmatic approach to managing legal risk.
Key Responsibilities
Lead, mentor, and develop a small team of legal and compliance professionals.
Foster a culture of integrity, accountability, and collaboration.
Drive continuous improvement across legal and compliance processes.
Support team members' professional growth through coaching and development plans.
Provide strategic legal and regulatory advice to the Chief Legal Officer, CEO, and Board.
Oversee all legal affairs, including contracts, litigation, M&A, intellectual property, and employment law.
Develop and implement governance frameworks aligned with ASIC and other regulatory standards.
Manage relationships with external legal advisors and ensure costโeffective service delivery.
Ensure compliance with relevant legislation including the Corporations Act, Insurance Contracts Act, and Privacy Act.
Oversee internal and external dispute resolution (IDR/EDR) processes, ensuring timely and fair outcomes for customers.
Support company secretarial and governance duties, including preparation of Board and Committee papers and compliance with ASIC requirements.
About You
You are a respected senior legal professional with demonstrated leadership capability and the ability to operate at both strategic and operational levels.
You bring credibility, influence, and sound judgment to complex business and regulatory challenges.
Key Requirements
Degree: Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD) and admission to practise law in Australia.
Years' postโadmission experience, including at least 5 years in a senior leadership role.
Strong background in financial services, ideally with life insurance experience.
Demonstrated success leading legal, compliance, or governance functions.
Proven ability to balance commercial outcomes with legal and ethical obligations.
Excellent stakeholder management, communication, and influencing skills.
Experience liaising with regulators and industry bodies (e.g. ASIC, AFCA, OAIC, FSC, or Calli).
