Department:
Technology
Employment Type:
Permanent - Full Time
Location:

Description
About the Role:
As a Software Engineer / Site Reliability Engineer within the Betashares Direct core platform team, you’ll help ensure the reliability, scalability and security of our investing and superannuation platform. You’ll work across cloud infrastructure, deployment pipelines and backend services that support critical capabilities including trading, cash management, corporate actions, portfolio investing and user management.
This role blends platform engineering and hands‑on software engineering, with a strong focus on operational excellence. You’ll design, build and operate the systems that underpin our platform, improving observability, resilience and performance while reducing operational toil through automation and engineering‑led solutions.
Working closely with engineering, operations and product teams, you’ll help shape platform capabilities that support an ambitious product roadmap. You’ll bring an SRE mindset to incident response, monitoring and reliability, and a software engineering approach to building robust, secure and scalable systems that perform at scale.
This is a strong opportunity for an engineer who enjoys working close to the core of a platform, cares deeply about system quality and reliability, and wants to have a real impact in a fast‑growing, product‑led environment.
Role Responsibilities
Manage the deployment and provisioning of cloud resources using AWS, Kubernetes, and Terraform.
Lead initiatives to strengthen platform security, reducing risk through preventative controls and automation.
Own service reliability targets (SLIs/SLOs) and error budgets; drive improvements using data and incident learnings.
Build and maintain monitoring/alerting for infrastructure and applications (metrics, logs, traces) to ensure fast detection and diagnosis.
Perform capacity planning, performance testing, and cost optimisation.
Must be willing to contribute to backend development as a software engineer when required.
Work to best practice engineering standards, with a focus on writing clean, robust, and secure code.
Skills & Experience
Tertiary qualifications in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, or a related field.
Two or more years’ experience as a software engineer, with a focus on backend development.
Four or more years’ experience in an SRE‑type role with experience in provisioning, scaling, securing and maintaining infrastructure.
High level of proficiency in at least one programming language, with a willingness and ability to learn Go and Rust.
Hands‑on AWS operations (compute, networking, IAM, logging/monitoring) and ability to debug real production issues.
Kubernetes experience (cluster upgrades, networking/ingress, autoscaling, troubleshooting).
Terraform proficiency (modules, state management, workspaces, best practices, CI validation).
Solid networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, DNS, HTTP/TLS, load balancing, routing).
Genuine passion for technology and software development, and an interest in the financial services industry.
