Harry Maxwell has been engaged to conduct an executive search for a dynamic and forward‑thinking Design & Engineering Manager to build and lead the design and engineering function within a major engineering organisation.

Reporting directly to the Managing Director, the Design & Engineering Manager will drive the strategic growth, technical direction, and operational performance of the internal engineering function overseeing multidisciplinary design delivery, producing high‑quality tender and ECI outputs, and representing the business with strong executive presence across client, contractor, and internal interfaces.

The ideal candidate will bring deep engineering leadership experience, proven capability in managing ECI/tender design activities, strong commercial acumen, and the ability to build capability, shape strategy, and deliver compliant, high‑quality engineering outcomes across complex projects.

About the Role:

Lead the development of design and engineering growth strategies and integrate them into the broader business plan

Identify and pursue project opportunities aligned with business capability and strategic direction

Prepare and submit EOIs and tender proposals, including engineering costings, in collaboration with Business Development

Represent the business in client and contractor meetings, design reviews, and technical workshops

Provide strong executive presence and act as the senior representative of the engineering function to internal and external stakeholders

Develop and execute strategic growth plans for the internal engineering business unit

Build business cases for new service offerings, capability expansion, and commercial opportunities

Drive business development through established networks of clients, suppliers, and industry partners

Champion best‑practice engineering processes, including first‑principles design, risk assessments, and design governance

Drive innovation, standardisation, and optimisation across engineering methodologies, tools, and workflows

Key Requirements:

Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical or Mechanical disciplines

15+ years of engineering experience in relevant sectors

5+ years in leadership roles (Lead Engineer, Principal Engineer, Engineering Manager, Design Manager)

Extensive experience in design management across ECI/FEED, D&C and EPC project environments

Demonstrated ability to build and lead high‑performing engineering teams

Strong commercial capability, including costing, tender preparation, and managing engineering budgets and performance

Experience developing business cases, strategic plans, or growth initiatives

Strong stakeholder engagement skills and executive‑level communication

Established network of clients, suppliers, and engineering professionals (highly desirable)

Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) or working toward chartership (preferred)
