Job Description

Opera Queensland is one of Australia’s major arts organisations. Presenting work around Australia and with a growing slate of international performances, we embrace opera’s extraordinary emotional and collaborative energy. Working in spaces as intimate as a recital studio or grand as the Outback, we set out to redefine what opera can be for a modern audience. Located in the heart of Brisbane’s South Bank cultural precinct, Opera Queensland enjoys creative partnerships with multiple arts organisations, festivals and presenters across and beyond Queensland.

Opera Queensland is seeking exceptional individuals to fill several Non-Executive Director vacancies as part of planned Board Succession. Two Non-Executive Director roles become available in May 2026 and active recruitment is underway for these roles.

This is an exciting opportunity for visionary Directors who are passionate about the arts and committed to driving the strategic direction of Queensland's very own Opera Company. As a Board Director you will collaborate with fellow board Directors and the executive team to shape policies, ensure financial stability, foster community engagement and grow our company.

Key Responsibilities Strategic Leadership: Contribute to the development and implementation of strategic plans that align with Opera Queensland’s vision and goals.

Governance: Ensure robust governance practices are maintained, including compliance with legal and ethical standards.

Financial Oversight: Monitor the organisation's financial performance and ensure compliance with audit and risk obligations

Advocacy: Act as an ambassador for Opera Queensland, promoting its work and impact within the community.

Philanthropy and fundraising: contribute to and support philanthropy and fundraising activities

Collaboration: Work closely with the Artistic Director/CEO, the Executive Leadership Team, other Board Directors, the Opera Queensland Team, donors, supporters and other stakeholders to achieve collective goals and objectives.

Selection Criteria:

Proven track record in leadership roles, preferably within the arts, cultural, or nonprofit sectors

A deep appreciation for opera and a passion for and commitment to advancing the arts in Queensland

Strong strategic thinking, financial acumen, risk management skills

Excellent communication and networking abilities

In addition to the above Opera Queensland is seeking NEDs with

specific skills and experience

in:

Finance and accounting – ability and willingness to Chair the Audit & Risk Committee

Philanthropy and fundraising

Australian Institute of Company Directors graduate, or equivalent qualifications, highly desirable, or a willingness to acquire training in board governance

OQ strongly encourages applicants from diverse backgrounds.

Expectations of Board members: Willingness to dedicate time and effort to six Board Meetings a year; willingness to join a Board Committee (Human Resources; Audit and Risk; or Fund Raising) requiring another three or four meetings a year, attend Opera Queensland events, and support fund raising initiatives.

Why Join OQ? While this is a non‑paid role there are a number of benefits to being part of a dynamic and passionate team dedicated to making a difference in the arts community.

Tickets to opening night performances, with the opportunity to bring a friend, builds Directors’ exposure to Opera and to OQ’s talented performers, artists, and influential leaders.

Contribute to the growth and success of Opera Queensland and help bring extraordinary opera experiences to audiences throughout Queensland and beyond.

How to Apply Interested candidates are invited to submit their resume and a short cover letter, no more than two pages, summarising their experience against the selection criteria, qualifications and motivation for joining the Board.

During your application process you will be asked to highlight your skills and attributes that most align to the Board's skills matrix. You can find out more about Opera Queensland by visiting www.oq.com.au
