Job Description

AFG is going through an exciting period of digital transformation, and we have set some ambitious goals to meet our aspirations.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and automation are key enablers of our next-generation platform strategy, helping us deliver smarter, faster, and more personalised experiences for brokers and customers.

As a leader in software engineering, you will prioritise people, refine processes, and ensure innovative technology. You will guide daily operations and strategic growth, fostering team capabilities. You will champion and evolve the Software Engineering Practice, ensuring seamless collaboration across domains like Enterprise and Solutions Architecture, and Quality Assurance.

In this role, you will also lead the integration of AI-driven capabilities into AFG’s core digital products; leveraging foundational models and partner platforms to enhance decisioning, automation, and user experience.

Your responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

Lead, mentor, and manage a team of software engineers by being hands‑on, leading by example, fostering a collaborative and high‑performance culture.

Oversee the entire software development lifecycle, from planning and design to implementation and maintenance.

Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to define project requirements, deliverables, and timelines.

Ensure the delivery of high‑quality software solutions that meet business objectives and user needs.

Drive the adoption of AI‑powered services and tools within the software ecosystem – ranging from intelligent data insights to natural language interfaces and workflow automation.

Identify areas for improvement in the software development process and implement strategies to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.

Facilitate continuous learning and professional development opportunities for team members.

Nurture a culture of innovation and continuous improvement within the engineering team.

Partner with architecture and product leaders to define how AI technologies – such as large language models (LLMs), generative AI and agentic AI – can be safely and effectively integrated into AFG’s offerings.

Who We’re Looking For

Proven experience in software engineering and a strong technical background.

The ability to deep‑dive into code and solutions to tackle challenges and solve problems.

Experience in leading and managing software engineering teams, with a track record of successful project delivery.

In‑depth knowledge of software development methodologies, including Agile and Scrum.

Strong understanding of software architecture and design principles.

Excellent problem‑solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues.

Demonstrated experience in driving process improvements and implementing best practices in software engineering.

Knowledge of security best practices and experience in ensuring the security of software applications.

Experience integrating or operationalising AI and machine learning services – such as cloud‑based LLM APIs, AI agents, or recommendation systems – is highly desirable.

Awareness of ethical AI principles, data governance, and responsible model usage.

Relevant bachelor’s degree or higher is highly desirable.

Relevant industry certifications are desirable, especially in agile processes and cloud technologies.

Extensive leadership and management experience in the Software Engineering domain.

As an outstanding communicator, you will have the ability to simplify complex technical concepts for everyone.

Your collaborative spirit ensures you put people first, processes second, and technology third.

You are a curious learner, always eager to expand your knowledge, and results‑driven, ensuring tasks are completed efficiently and effectively.

You bring enthusiasm for the evolving AI landscape, inspiring your team to experiment responsibly and adopt emerging capabilities that create tangible value for AFG’s business and customers.
