We are seeking suitable applications for a highly capable and values-driven Consultant - Paediatrician – Community Child Health to join our State Forensics Mental Health Services Youth Detention Service team. Interviews will be scheduled for 12 March 2026.

About our service The Neurodevelopmental and Mental Health Service (NDMHS) based at Banksia Hill Detention Centre (BHDC) provides specialist mental health and neurodevelopmental assessment and management of young people admitted to custody. The NDMHS provides mental health and neurodevelopmental triage and assessment, treatment and management, consultation and education with services in and outside of youth detention, as well as referral outwards to appropriate services upon the young person’s release into the community.

What is our Consultant - Paediatrician – Community Child Health role? As a Consultant Paediatrician (Community Child Health), you will work within a multidisciplinary team providing a high quality paediatric developmental and medical assessment and management of children and adolescents admitted to custody. This position is a clinical leadership role within the team, alongside the NDMHS Consultant Psychiatrist, and is based onsite at BHDC. Every day at work will be different, and what you may encounter can include:

Providing senior clinical leadership and expertise in paediatric development and medical care within the multidisciplinary team and across youth detention.

Providing direct developmental and medical assessment and management for young people and their family/caregivers in a weekly medical clinic.

In consultation with the NDMHS Consultant Psychiatrist and Team Leader, leading the development, implementation, and evaluation of the NDMHS, contributing to clinical governance, quality improvement, and research initiatives.

Collaborating and liaising with multidisciplinary teams and external stakeholders to ensure coordinated and patient‑cared care for a vulnerable cohort of young people.

Consultation and advice to ensure equitable and timely access to quality diagnostic assessments for young people with known or suspected neurodevelopmental and mental health disorders.

Evidence of registration

by the Medical Board of Australia and Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians or equivalent that is recognised for registration as a specialist with the Medical Board of Australia, ideally with specialist training in Community Child Health.

Eligibility to Apply Australian citizenship or permanent residency is an essential requirement for applicants to be considered for permanent positions in the public sector. To be eligible for a fixed‑term appointment you must have documentary evidence of your entitlement to live and work in Australia for the period of the contract.
